Big Mountain Hostel

The Review

Big Mountain Hostel is a very large and lively hostel. Staff are friendly and will often party with guests when they’re off duty. Even though there's a lot of guests moving in and out of the hostel, it still seems quite safe. There are also multiple Wi-Fi outlets, resulting in fast and reliable internet connection.

The Location

Big Mountain Hostel is in a very prime location, very close to the centre of Huaraz, only about three hundred metres away from the Plaza de Armas Huraz, which is the main square of the town. It is also only a block away from all the major bus stations and the bars and club district in Huaraz. There are also many restaurants, cafes, stores, and tour agencies conveniently located just outside of the hostel doors.

Even though the hostel’s main floor is on the upper floors, it is very visible and has clear signage from the ground level. On the first floor of the hostel is the tour agency, where guests can book activities and trips.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The hostel itself takes up three floors, starting on the second floor. Two of the floors are a combination of single and double private rooms and four-, six- and eight-person mixed dorm rooms. Each room comes with its own en suite washroom.

Rooms and washrooms are very basic, aside from the beds, there are no other furniture pieces available. The dorm rooms are pretty similar in sizing, regardless of the number of bunk beds within. As a result, the six- and eight-bed rooms can get very crowded when fully booked, which happens often.

Common Spaces

There are lots of space for guests to not only relax, but also socialize at Big Mountain Hostel. On the main floor, in front of the reception, there are several couches. On the floor right above, there’s a TV and a handful of couches for guests to enjoy and plug in their own shows and movies. The last floor is a rooftop bar and restaurant. There’s lots of tables and even a ping-pong table for guest use. Big Mountain is a very lively hostel where loud music is regularly playing throughout the day and night. It is often fully booked and attracts a younger crowd of travelers.

Big Mountain is a very sociable hostel, and many guests are interested in mingling and partying. Even though the hostel is more expensive than some of the other hostels in its vicinity, it’s recommended to reserve a spot in advance, as the hostel is regularly fully booked.
