Backpackers Family House

The Review

Backpackers Family House is a friendly and relaxed hostel, very close to the sea, with good amenities in the popular Lima suburb of Miraflores.

The Location

Backpackers Family House is in coastal Miraflores, where many of the city's backpacker accommodation is also based. It is a very short walk to parks overlooking the ocean but is a little further from the main hub of bars and shops in Miraflores than many other hostels. Buses to take you into the center of Lima are a few minutes’ walk away, but be warned that the center isn't exactly close (about a half hour bus ride). It is easiest to find by taxi on your first visit as public transport is a bit tricky to navigate and there isn’t really anything which makes this hostel especially noticeable from the outside, so make sure you have the exact address and look for the wooden gate on the corner building.

Rooms and Bathrooms

There are both dorms and private rooms available. Dorms are clean and functional, with plenty of lockers (bring a padlock). The mattresses in one dorm, which one fellow traveler dubbed "taco mattresses," are spongy things that seem to envelop you and could definitely be better. The bathrooms have hot water and are kept nice and clean and there are additional toilets outside the rooms too.

Common Spaces

There’s a large TV room with sofas, a DVD library, and a book exchange. There’s also free Wi-Fi and a guest computer (you need to make a small donation to use the PC). The common areas are painted with colorful artwork. There is a small outdoor area with a sheltered dining table and hammocks. There is a decently equipped kitchen and a supermarket close by in case you want to cook. Backpackers Family House is quite sociable but definitely not a party hostel.

This is a nice hostel with a pleasant vibe and helpful staff. There are free Spanish lessons once a week and a free basic breakfast supplied daily, which is a definite bonus. It feels more relaxed than a lot of the other hostels in Miraflores, owing to its quiet location and lack of a bar. However, during our stay there were always plenty of guests around to talk to and staff who clearly know the area well are only to happy to give suggestions of places to visit.

Hard to find but worth it!
Very close to coast. Nice atmosphere. Good breakfast (mango cream, good coffee, good bread). Nice common area (inside and outside). English speaking staff. recommendations for restaurants. Hard to find (wrong address in reservation confirmation, no sign at the door). Really nice stay, recommended.

Friendliest, most cost effective and comfortable hostel in Peru
We visited the BFH in May of 2008. Pedro and Christian welcomed us to the hostel like no one we've dealt with in all of our travels. They showed us everywhere that was worth a visit in Lima, and kept us away from all the "dangerous" parts of town. Pedro even helped us get place tickets online in a pinch because some of our plans got messed up along the way. And finally, remember that if Pedro asks you to play jenga, you have no reason to worry because he is awful.
Clean, Friendly, Secure, Location, Location!
In June 2007, I stayed here after I had already traveled to Machu Picchu, Cuzco, and the Amazon rainforest. This hostel is in an excellent location, where it is safe to walk two miles past beautiful parks, tennis club, and ocean views to the modern Larcomar shopping mall and Miraflores Casino. There are also many high-rise penthouse condos with security guards and chauffeurs lining the opposite side of the street. Within one block of the hostel is a quaint cliffside cafe with delicious pastries, sandwiches, lattes, and tea. The new owners keep the hostel spotless and shiny and very comfortable. Twenty-four hour reception.

We stayed here when we first arrived in South America, the service was excellent, the staff extremely helpful and friendly, the hostel is comfortable, cheap and homely. We are coming back to Lima to meet some friends and we are going to be staying there! We couldn't ask for better accommodation! Well worth it!

Backpackers family house is well situated in front of the sea in miraflores district. There is no noise, it's a fine place to be -- all commodities are near, with the advantage to be near beach way and parks. The hostal is well decorated with nice, old furniture. The owner Aymar give some good informations about Lima city and this is good, because here it's better to know where you go because of some insecurity. so thanks to backpackers family house, i spend a really nice time here.
