If Poco a Poco Hostel's aim is to be the best hostel in León, in most regards it succeeds. Though a bit pricier than other establishments, staff are friendly and extremely helpful, rooms and common spaces are top notch, and additional perks like nightly activities and very cheap breakfast make this a quality accommodation.
The Location
Poco a Poco Hostel is optimally located in downtown León, about a twenty-minute walk or five-minute drive from the main bus terminal. Numerous bars, restaurants, and shops permeate the area.
With a short walk, you can find the world-famous Catedral de la Asunción and various fascinating museums and churches. For food, street markets bustle just beyond the cathedral, and supermarket La Colonial is about a three-minute jaunt from the hostel.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel has a variety of rooms available, including multiple dorms and private chambers. Dorms are spacious, featuring bunk beds with metal frames. Every bed has a dedicated fan, essential for León’s extreme heat. Each dorm-dweller is given a fairly spacious locker, which will fit most everything, except for a large backpack. The mattresses are comfortable, but some of the sheets have minor stains. This is unexpected, considering the obvious effort the hostel puts into everything else.
Poco a Poco maintains clean and rather modern-looking bathrooms. The main bathroom area includes three toilet stalls, three shower stalls, and one double sink. An additional public toilet and shower stall are found closer to the dining area.
Showers have good pressure and are cold water only, though this isn’t an issue considering the typically hot weather. It must be noted that the toilet paper in the bathrooms is exceptionally soft -- a welcome change from the usual sandpaper found nearly everywhere else.
Common Spaces
Phenomenal common areas are perhaps Poco A Poco Hostel’s greatest achievement. A huge courtyard acts as the centerpiece for the residence, delivering a vibrant, sun-kissed vibe. A well-maintained garden and elegant stone fountain are prominently displayed. At night, the space is splayed with charming and unobtrusive mood lighting, enhancing an already serene atmosphere.
Next to reception is the main lounge, offering multiple relaxing couches, chairs, hammocks, a book exchange, board games, and even a swinging chair. A second lounge is found in the middle of the courtyard and features an open-air shower and, rather uniquely, a station where visitors can refresh themselves with a light water mist. A terrace with even more relaxing space is a short flight of stairs away.
The hostel’s dining area is expansive and filled with classic wooden benches. A ping-pong table and hammock round out the space. Next to the dining room is one of the best hostel kitchens around, with large fridge, stove, sink, plenty of counter space, and nearly new cookware. The hostel even offers guests Tupperware in which to keep their foodstuffs. Complimentary coffee and tea are available any time of day.
Overall, the common spaces make social interaction easy at Poco a Poco. The hostel owners (a couple from the Netherlands) provide optional activities, such as a free salsa class, a BBQ night, and a tour of a local fortress, adding a special touch to an already great environment.
Summary
Poco a Poco hostel may be a couple bucks more than other hostels in León, but the extra cost is arguably worthwhile. The accommodation provides high-quality amenities and an excellent social atmosphere (without being a "party hostel"), and the owners are genuinely friendly and very knowledgeable.
