Hostal Corazon Del Mundo is one of the more established backpacker hostels in Havana. Although some of the rooms have a strange configuration, it is nonetheless a very comfortable and friendly house in an area where there are half a dozen backpacker choices.
The Location
Corazon Del Mundo -- located a twenty-minute walk west of Parque Central and the start of the narrow streets that lead into Havana Vieja (Old Havana) -- is in a very local Cuban neighborhood and visitors will not have to walk far to find local bars and cafes at local prices.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Most of the accommodation is upstairs, and this includes a double room with a twin room above it accessed by a wooden staircase within the double room. The four-bed dorm is really a seven-bed dorm. There are four bunk beds on a lower level, then a wooden staircase leading to three single beds above. Each of these rooms has its own bathroom and there is a shared bathroom along the balcony by the kitchen. The bunk beds are sturdy, wooden structures and the four bunks have air conditioning. The three single beds above have only a standing fan, likewise the double and twin. There are no lockers or storage for luggage, but there is plenty of floor space. The mattresses are pretty reasonable and extra blankets can be had if the air conditioner is a little cold for you. There is twenty-four-hour hot water in the bathrooms.
Common Spaces
Corazon Del Mundo has more common areas than any of the other hostels in this area of Havana. Upstairs, there is a sitting and dining room at the front of the house with a narrow balcony overlooking the street. The sitting area has comfy wicker chairs and the dining area has polished wooden chairs and tables; it’s a beautifully decorated room. The common kitchen has a gas cooker, microwave, and a fridge, and is mostly used by the staff to prepare breakfasts should guests require them at an extra cost. However, guests are free to use the kitchen at other times. Walking through the kitchen, there is a wooden staircase that goes up to a roof terrace. There are metal chairs in the shade and, further along the roof, seats made from wooden pallets out in the sun. El Capitolio, in the center of Havana, can be seen from up here.
Summary
This is a fantastic choice. While it's not one of the cheaper hostels in Havana, it still is very good value as it has a lot of common space in which guests can socialize and is kept very clean. The family that lives downstairs and runs the hostel has plenty of information and can book onward travel for guests. This is especially useful for getting around Cuba, as the bus station is inconveniently located way out of town. Corazon Del Mundo can book collectivos or shared taxis that do the journey for only a little more than the bus, and will pick you up from the hostel. This is an excellent choice and is rightly very popular, so book ahead.
