Hostel Ondas Medellín is located in the Floresta area of Medellín -- one of two "nice areas to stay" in this sprawling city. The hostel is only a few minutes away from the Metro system (the only one in Colombia), which quickly links you to the main city and surrounding attractions. It's a lovely hostel with great rooms and communal spaces galore!
The Location
Although Floresta is one of the nicer places to stay in Medellín, and you can't fault Hostel Ondas' proximity to the Metro, it does feel a bit far out. To get to the city centre, it's only ten minutes on the Metro, but it feels like a big effort to go and get a ticket, go through, wait, and finally get to town.
However, it's in a very quiet and safe neighbourhood surrounded by supermarkets and restaurants, and everything you might need is close by (apart from the main city!). It's easily reached by Metro or taxi, and although it might seem to be in the middle of nowhere, it's not too far to anything really.
Hostel Ondas has a twenty-four-hour reception, which makes it easy and convenient to check in at any time, and also to enjoy Medellín day and night with no curfew!
Rooms and Bathrooms
The rooms are large and comfortable with lockers and drawers, mirrors, and ample power points. They're homey, with comfortable wooden bunks with colourful blankets and plenty of space. There isn't air conditioning in the rooms, but it doesn't feel too hot and there's a small fan just in case!
There are a variety of bathrooms that you can use, outdoor and indoor showers, and also a toilet on its own with no shower -- meaning the wait shouldn't be too long. There's hot water and it's very spacious in the large bathroom with lots of room for your stuff whilst you're showering. It's very clean at all times, and has everything you need, including liquid hand soap, which is always a nice touch.
Common Spaces
Hostel Ondas is not short of communal spaces at all, there's the cafe downstairs, which is amazing and well priced -- it attracts locals as well as people staying in the hostel. The middle floor has lots of chairs with a workbench, relaxing sofas/beds, hammock chairs, and the gigantic kitchen. The kitchen has a large dining room table, which creates a good atmosphere for fellow travelers who like to cook. It has all the basics plus more, and it's very clean and easy to use. It boasts a large fridge/freezer and lots of shelf space too! A variety of free food and herbs and spices are available courtesy of the hostel too -- a nice touch.
Upstairs is a very funky roof terrace decorated with rustic tables and old tires as chairs, and it is generally just very cool and a great place to get some fresh air and views!
Summary
If you're happy to feel a little bit out of town, but at the same time know you're in a quiet, safe, and convenient neighbourhood then Hostel Ondas is perfect. And realistically nothing is too far away by Metro or taxi.
The cafe downstairs is perfect for travelers -- Wi-Fi in the hostel is great, laundry is cheap, and it attracts a good bunch of travelers.
