Samarce House

The Review

Samarce House is not your typical hostel. It is more like a bed-and-breakfast type of accommodation, because it offers mostly double bed rooms and only one dormitory. Nevertheless, it has all the features that any other hostel has, so you'll end up having a great stay in Punta Arenas.

The Location

The hostel is located very close to the center. The main street is only a three-minute walk, and the bus terminal is a ten-minute walk. The university and the Zona Franca shopping area are a bit further away (a long, thirty-minute walk), but taxis can be found near the hostel to solve that problem. Samarce Hostel used to be located a couple hundred meters further away in an alley. So if you go looking for it, just make sure you have the right address.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The dormitory is a spacious room, containing two bunk beds and two single beds. Beds are cosy, sheets are clean, blankets are warm. There is one closet where you can put some luggage in, but it's not big enough for everyone's stuff. There aren't any lockers either, so backpacks and valuables will just have to be stored beside the bed.

There are only two bathrooms for all the guests. So in the morning and around bedtime you might have to wait in line. Toilet and showers are very clean and are regularly checked and cleaned if necessary during the day.

Common Spaces

The common spaces are not that great. In this regard, it is quite obvious that Samarce House is not like a regular hostel, and does not really aim at the backpacking traveler. The kitchen is basically the owner's kitchen, but it can be used by the guests. The fridge is not big, there is no room to store your food in cupboards, and there is only one gas stove. Nevertheless it's very clean and has everything you need to do your cooking. The kitchen table, again, is not very big. It can be crowded there at times, as it is the only place in the house that can serve as a common area. This is also where every morning a very nice breakfast can be enjoyed -- coffee, tea, bread, oatmeal, yogurt, cheese, and ham. Outside, there is a garden with washing lines, even though they ask that you do no do your own laundry, but instead let them do it.

Samarce House creates a very homelike, family feeling, because it is not a coming and going of backpackers. No wonder it seems to attract a lot of families with young kids as well. It's a bit different than regular hostel, but definitely a great place to stay.
