éthic étapes - Ciarus ("ethic steps") is in a class by itself -- a hidden gem of budget luxury and open-mindedness in a beautiful city. We've never seen a hostel quite like this, and are very impressed by what it has to offer compared to the average hostel. Their motto is "accepted for who I am" and they encourage open-mindedness and a free exchange of ideas in a beautiful, environmentally friendly atmosphere.
The Location
The hostel is a next to several public transport stops, five minutes from the city center, and a relatively short walk from Old Town and from the central train station. It is in a nice, quiet neighborhood located just behind the Palace of Justice and a small park, with plenty of shops and sites in the area.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The beautifully designed, modern, comfortable dorm rooms are incredible. The mattresses are very comfortable with nice linens; lots of good pillows; and individual reading lamps, charging outlets, and shelves for each bed. Most rooms have a table and chairs as well as decent-sized lockers and an open closet for hanging coats and clothing. The windows have excellent blackout blinds as well as in-window pleated shades to allow both privacy and light or darkness. Each dorm room has its own en suite bathroom, which is very clean, bright, and relatively spacious, but could use a few more shelves in the shower. Soap, shampoo, and towels are provided free of charge. There is a double-door system for the rooms and corridors, keeping the rooms very quiet at all hours. We couldn't hear other people coming and going or any noise from the common areas at all. The dark, quiet room and comfortable mattresses and pillows gave us the best night's sleep we've ever had in a hostel. Everything is a feast for the eyes and well thought out to provide travelers with a great place to recharge and get a good nights' sleep.
Common Spaces
There are a variety of different types of common areas in the hostel, which is designed for engaging with people. The reception area has several tucked away lounging areas with comfortable chairs clustered around the space, as well as a bar, piano, snack/drink machine, and plenty of outlets for charging electronic devices. There are a several large common areas with tables and chairs, reading lights, outlets, and comfortable couches where people are encouraged to hang out and open-mindedly exchange ideas. There is also a basement game room with a pool table, air hockey, and foosball. While there is no kitchen, there is a large dining area with vending machines, a self-service cafe with delicious French food, and both indoor and outdoor seating. Free, high-speed Wi-Fi is available in the common areas, and the front desk provides maps, brochures, reading materials, and tour info. The staff are very helpful and friendly, and although the reception is usually open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., there is a night guard on duty to give access to the hostel when the reception is closed.
Summary
Overall, éthic étapes - Ciarus is incredibly beautiful, unique, luxurious hostel conveniently located near public transportation and sightseeing areas. It provides a great balance between socializing and resting, and is good for groups and single travelers, extroverts and introverts, and those wanting to socialize and those who want a restful nights' sleep. This is one of the most incredible, interesting hostels we've ever stayed in, and its high quality; good price; decent location; thoughtful design; and friendly, refreshing environment make it a hostel that is worth visiting. We've already stayed twice and definitely plan to visit again.

• How to get to CIARUS
• By bus from train station :
• Take bus no.10 towards 'Brant Universit' from in front of the railway station, and get off at the 3rd stop ('Place de Pierre').
• On foot from train station :
• Follow the Rue Maire Kuss, which leeds away from the train station, just opposite the main entrance. When you reach the end of the street, take a left and follow the canal (lIll) until you see the Palais de Justice. From here, CIARUS is indicated by street signs. Take a left on Rue Finkmatt and you will see the CIARUS sign above our door, about 200 meters down, on your left; about 15 minutes in total.
• By air:
• Take the local train directtly from the airport, arrival at the main railway station.
• From the motorway:
• Coming from Haguenau, take 'Place de Haguenau' exit then follow signs for CIARUS
• Coming from Colmar/Mulhouse, take 'Wacken' exit, then 'Avenue des Vosges' then follow signs for CIARUS.
• Coming from Paris, take 'Place de Haguenau' exit and follow signs for CIARUS
