HI - Santiago - Che Lagarto Hostel Reviews

This large hostel feels more like a hotel, with a nice reception and elevators taking you up to the 9th floor. You can walk up to the 10th floor for the rooftop terrace too! The hostel is in the centre of town and is an amazing choice when travelling to Santiago!

The Location

The HI Santiago is right in the heart of the city, only 15 minutes by Metro to the bus station, and the Metro is less than a 5 minute walk away from the hostel. The main square, post office, cathedral, presidential buildings, etc are easily reached by foot in less than 10 minutes. Although traffic does come through this road, it's relatively quiet in the rooms and it's surrounded by many pedestrianised roads. An abundance of shops, banks, bars and restaurants are on your doorstep, including treats such as Subway and Starbucks too!

Rooms and Bathrooms

The rooms are very spacious with lockers for valuables. You can choose from mixed or female dorms and they have ensuites. They rooms are cleaned daily and the beds are made daily as well. The bathrooms are clean but could do with a bit of maintenance - the soap dispenser fixture remains on the wall and an old, disused shower head remains in the shower... Also there is no hand soap. Some rooms have an additional small room which has a stainless steel sink with running drinking water.

Common Spaces

The kitchen is a great size, always clean and beautifully decorated. However it's hard to find basic essentials such as mugs/bowls - they come out for breakfast but gradually disappear throughout the day. Breakfast is included in some rates but others it isn’t. You can pay for breakfast, but it's relatively expensive. The annoying thing about this is the breakfast is served in the kitchen so you can't use the kitchen for personal cooking until after midday. Annoying if you're on a budget and want to be cooking or preparing low-cost breakfasts...

The reception area is large with seating, sofas, a television and pool table, and computers for you to use. Upstairs there's a rooftop terrace which is very basic and nice during the day and in the evening it turns into a bar/party area. However don't expect a proper bar, it's a table set up with alcohol and cups but a "bar" nonetheless and there's happy hours each night.

Summary

This hostel feels very safe as you have a key card to enter the rooms and you have to press a buzzer to enter the front door. Guests are provided with a bright green wristband to be recognised by all the staff and to keep unknown people out of the hostel grounds!

A great atmosphere and it feels more hotel-like than hostel-like in certain aspects. Not the cheapest option in Santiago but definitely one of the best for facilities and cleanliness.
