iSanook Hostel

The Review

iSanook Hostel is great and in a quiet area, but it's also far from everything.

The Location

This hostel is on a quiet little back street. There is a convenience store and ATM, as well as the local bus stop, just a short walk away. Tuk-tuks are aplenty, but their charges are a ridiculous. There are only a few attractions within walking distance, so transport will have to be used. China Town and the MBK Shopping Center are both two kilometers away, which is about a thirty-minute walk. There are many street-food stalls in the vicinity with delicious-tasting food.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Our eight-bed dorm room is on the second floor -- and there's no elevator. The room is too cramped -- there is barely any space to move around. The beds are raised off the floor with luggage storage space underneath. The lockers are in the dorm room and we have to use our own padlock. The lights are so extremely dim; even though there are small lights under the beds as well as ceiling lights, and even after switching on our reading light, the room is still very dim. Each bed is equipped with two electric sockets and a reading light. The mattress and pillow are super comfortable and the duvet is nice and cozy. The air conditioner is only switched on at 7 p.m. and there is no fan in the room.

The bathrooms are at the end of the corridor and there are separate male and female rooms. The bathroom is very large with plenty of mirrors, hand basins, and hair dryers. The female bathroom has three showers and three toilets, and the shower space is huge. It's very disappointing though, that with such a huge shower space, they only have one little hook behind the door -- it's totally insufficient. The floors are a bit slippery when soapy. Each shower is equipped with a soap and shampoo dispenser.

Common Spaces

There are two common spaces in this hostel -- the reception area and the kitchen area. On the first floor is a little shared kitchen where guests can make food and store things in the fridge. There are tables and chairs where you can sit, as well as a small outside area with chairs. This room has an air conditioner, which is fantastic, as it can get pretty hot. The other common area is in the reception. On the one side of the room there are comfortable sofas, plenty of electric sockets and a TV. On the other side of the room, there is a large flat-screen TV, as well as a work space with electric sockets. An exchange library is in the one corner of the reception. The reception is open twenty-four hours, which is super convenient for late arrivals or early departures. The reception area/common area is air conditioned all day and night, which makes it a comfortable and great space in which to socialize. The Wi-Fi is not that great and we keep having to use our mobile data.

Even though the Wi-Fi wasn't the best, we still highly recommend a stay at this hostel.
