Gallery Hyde Park Reviews

Gallery Hyde Park is one of the cheaper options close to the center in London. It's pretty basic and bog-standard, but it does the trick for the price.

The Location

Situated on a quiet terrace of nineteenth-century listed buildings, Gallery Hostel is just five minutes’ walk from Queensway, which is the local high street, where several restaurants and shops can be found. The nearest tube station is also on Queensway, with easy, ten-minute access by the Central Line to the central shopping areas of Oxford Street and Tottenham Court Road. A three-minute walk along Queensway will bring visitors to another tube station, Bayswater, which runs on the District and Circle Line, leading to Paddington, King's Cross main line train stations, and Notting Hill Gate. Gallery Hostel is also just two minutes' walk from Hyde Park, on the other side of Bayswater Road. Bus Ninety-Four runs twenty-four hours along Bayswater Road to Piccadilly Circus via Marble Arch and Oxford Street.

Rooms and Bathrooms

There are three dormitories here with four, eight, and twenty-four beds; Gallery also has a small number of private rooms. The dorms are clean and roomy, but the metal bunk beds are rickety and squeaky. Some of the mattresses leave a lot to be desired too, so, if you can arrive early, you can test a few out before you make your choice. The bed linens -- like the walls, ceilings, and all the fixtures -- are a bright white and the sheets are crisply laundered, but guests must make their own beds. There are plenty of power sockets in the rooms and the free Wi-Fi signal is strong throughout the house. The twenty-four-bed dorm has large windows overlooking the street, but no curtains, which means the street lighting shines into the room all night and the sun streams in first thing in the morning. There are no lockers or any other storage in the dorms, but there are small lockers in the lounge downstairs by the reception desk. You need your own padlock for these, though.

The private rooms have en suite bathrooms facilities but the dorms share bathrooms that are scattered off the staircase landings. These are very small, but fairly clean and there could be a queue in the mornings as there are not too many of them.

Common Spaces

There are few common spaces here, so it's not really a social hostel. There’s nowhere to hang out and chat with other travelers. The tiny lounge opposite reception probably seats seven people maximum. When we stayed here, it was totally occupied by the staff. The reception desk is just a small window off the main entrance hallway, but the kitchen is clean and spacious. This is where the free breakfast is served, so it isn't possible for guests to cook at this time. There is a lack of pots, pans, and utensils also, but guests do have a kettle, two toasters, a microwave, two small fridges, and a six-ring gas cooker. There are several tables with chairs, and this seems to be the only place where guests can mix with any comfort.

Summary

Gallery Hostel is a very run-of-the-mill hostel; it's nothing fancy. That everything is painted white makes it feel very institutional; there's not a lot of character inside the hostel in contrast to the immense amount of character the old terraced buildings have from the outside. The hostel still has the old chandeliers, which is a nice touch, and it's very clean, but it is a place in which to sleep and then go out for the whole day. There is no social vibe here; the lack of common areas severely restricts this. The free Wi-Fi is very good and the breakfast is a self-service toast, spread, cereals, and tea and coffee affair. Gallery Hostel's beautiful location and the ease with which travelers can get anywhere in London via the excellent transport links make it a reasonable choice, but it is cheap and you get what you pay for.
