Loft Hostel is a beautiful hostel in the heart of Reykjavík. It is a large hostel, but doesn't feel impersonal and it is a social hostel despite the fact that the rooms are spread out on different floors. The prices may seem very high, but they are in line with the general cost of living in Iceland, which is by no means a budget destination.
The Location
The hostel is located on the main drag in the centre of the Icelandic capital. It is a very busy and very touristy area, but it also makes everything very accessible. One of the airport buses has a stop a few minutes' walk from the hostel and there are many restaurants and stores in the area. There are a few grocery stores -- some significantly cheaper than the norm -- so it is worth doing a little research before going. Parking is also available on the adjacent streets.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The dorm rooms are spacious and the beds are comfortable and sturdy. One thing that could be improved is the size of the lockers, which are barely large enough to hold your valuables. If you travel with a lot of electronics, the lockers might even be too small. There are outlets and headlamps for each bed.
There is an en suite shower, as well as a separate toilet, which are clean and well maintained. There is enough room for clothes and toiletries in both the shower room and the toilet room.
Common Spaces
There is one large common area on the top floor, which contains a dining area and a small bar area, as well as a nice terrace facing the street. During our stay, the days were very long and it was nice to be able to be outside on the terrace while observing the midnight sunset. This is a social area, and although this is a large hostel, people like to talk and meet other travelers. The dining room area is also where a breakfast buffet is served in the morning for a fee.
Summary
Overall, we have loved our stay at Loft Hostel and would love to visit again. The central location may sometimes feel a little too touristy, but the city is not large and it is very easy to walk to other areas of the city that may be less crowded.

Loft Hostel will be a fun hostel in the centre of downtown Reykjavík. It is located on Reykjavík’s main shopping street and within 5 minutes walking distance from Hallgrímskirkja, the City Pond and Harpa Concert Hall; it literally has the best of the city on its doorstep. Loft also boasts one of the finest views in town with its large top floor balcony café overlooking the city centre – a great spot to people watch or catch a glimpse of the northern lights in winter.
Make yourself at home in our cozy lounge; make new friends at the bar or surf the web using our free WiFi. Facilities include free computer access, fully equipped guest kitchen, book exchange, free luggage storage during stay. Loft café and bar offers top quality coffee and wine and beer from local breweries, as well as some sweet and savoury treats, and our mostly organic breakfast is a great start to the day. We host regular movie nights, music events, foosball tournaments and other social events.
Loft offers a wide range of 4-8 person dorms and double rooms, all with private bathroom. Linen is included in all rooms. Free lockers are available in dormitories. Female only dorms and single rooms are available upon request.
