International House & Hostel - Best hostel in Medellin
I stayed at International House & Hostel in Medellin for about 2 weeks while backpacking in South America. It claims to be the best hostel in Medellin thanks to a travel website badge, and they are not kidding! While there is room for improvement, mainly with more staff to help around, the place is huge, very quiet compared to other locations in the city and right next to a workout park. I stayed in a shared dorm with some other backpackers, but Joel, the owner, showed me the private rooms which are basically small apartments with their own kitchen and living room. A cheap hostel from my point of view considering how much you get for your buck. Tip -- Stay enough time to try the BBQ at the rooftop.
Best Group Accommodation in Medellin
I had heard about a much recommended hostel in Medellin for group accommodations. I travel with a large party of grown people and we value nice quiet spaces were respectful people. While we are aware that backpackers are young and wild the general crowd at International Hostel Medellin was very respectful and welcoming. The hostel is located in a quiet part of town, away from the popular Parque Lleras. We also got involved in Spanish lesson meet-ups and enjoyed great local food down at the restaurant.
International House Medellin is a hostel with excellent facilities and amenities in an upscale and safe area of Medelln. Slightly better organization could go a long way in terms of improving the ambiance and assist with small daily issues that arise.
The Location
International House is located in the Belen area of Medelln, very close to the busy zone of Laureles. It's in a quiet, green, residential neighborhood and across the street there is a huge sports center with football fields, tennis and basketball courts, and swimming pools. Within a ten-minute walking distance you can get to a roundabout with various eating options, a big supermarket, a pharmacy, a bakery, and few bars. The metro station is about fifteen minutes away on foot, while taxis are generally a relatively cheap way of getting around as well.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The building consists of four floors, and private rooms as well as dormitories are also on offer (longer stays can also be arranged at a discounted rate). The dormitories range from three to ten beds, mostly bunk beds. The mattresses are in really good condition and there are lockers for each bed (with sockets inside them). Almost all rooms are also equipped with flat TVs.
The bathrooms is one of the best points of the hostel given that there is always hot water with excellent shower pressure. Towels are provided at check-in and the bathrooms, like all other rooms, are cleaned daily.
Common Spaces
Various spaces are available, providing the opportunity to meet others (depending also on the period, as there are low seasons as well), or have some privacy when needed. On the ground floor there is the reception area, which also serves as a bar and restaurant (very affordable!). Outside there are various tables and benches. Each of the four floors is equipped with a fully functional kitchen, a living room with sofas and cable TV, and small balcony. The terrace provides a huge common area, a very big TV, and an amazing view of the city. In addition, there is a laundry area on the terrace that works with coins. Excellent Wi-Fi is provided with a different router on each floor.
Summary
All in all, the setup of the hostel and the facilities offered are of the highest quality. Improvement of small organizational details, such as having more and permanent staff and the reception staying open longer to facilitate check-in, would make this hostel ideal.
Fantastic place. Great wifi, hot strong showers (just give it time to heat up first), the common area was comfortable and beautiful. Great location right across from the outdoor sports complex. Supermarket a 5 minute walk away with a shopping mall and restaurants. Staff were very friendly too.
My only issue with this place is the location. The immediate surrounding streets feel safe enough, but a 10 min walk in the wrong direction- especially at night- is almost a death sentence. Please do not do what I did and wander into the Barrio Trinidad if you would like to stay alive. Someone what shot in the shop directly next door to the hostel a few days before I arrived too.
Youll end up spending as much on Ubers as you would have if you booked one of the central popular hostels.
The hostel is a 15min walk from Laureles, which is a very nice neighbourhood to hang out. The owner was super nice and helped us with everything we needed. The kitchen is well equipped and nice to use.
After writing a thorough review in my notes of a mixed bag of experiences at this hostel - some good/bad, the owner sent me an email as an intimidation tactic to not write a poor review or else he will post my information all over hostel groups to never allow me to travel via hostel. The website assured me that this is not allowed from hostel owners. I did nothing wrong but 2 times throughout my 3 week stay mentioned the bathrooms were not being cleaned.
Great place to work remote from, super calm during the day. Rooftop area is set up well for meeting people. Free outdoor gym, running track, pool, etc right across the street. It was pretty much always clean, and the laundry service is pretty fast. Only issue I had was that the shower turns cold randomly.
A really nice, relaxed place to stay for a good price. There wasnt anyone to help me check-in when I got there and my bed wasnt ready, but I messaged the owner and they made a bed for me within the hour. Good place to stay if youre looking to avoid the party hostel scene and want something more relaxed.
Beautiful kitchen on roof
When I first arrived there was a woman and her dog living in the female dorm. She had her stuff spread out all over the room, including dirty dishes, not to mention her dog was living in there with her, totally unsanitary in my opinion, not to mention it jumped up on my bed a couple times. I guess this woman was a volunteer? but felt like she was making a mess so no one would want to stay in that dorm, so she could have it to herself. I staid to make a point. The kitchen upstairs was nice tho.
It was a great place to stay, very calm and with a great atmosphere. I would surely come back and recommend it to other people.
Great place and location in Medellin. Clean rooms. Helpful staff. Nice rooftop lounge and kitchen. Thanks.
Great location with an amazing outdoor gym right across the street. Most of the things to see/do require a 10-15minute taxi ride. The staff was very kind and helpful throughout our stay.
Kitchen: amazing wifi: great Location: great. Right next to the park, you can swim and workout for free. 3 min walk to exito. 7 min walk to Unicentro. Problems: it is SO LOUD. You'll hear the lady by the pool screeching nonstop at 8 in the morning, basketball players 24/7, planes that literally shake the building, and our lovely fruit vendors AGUACATEEE. Also owner does not know how to handle issues, be prepared if you have to deal w him. And beware that your food doesn't get thrown away
It is a nice hostal and especially shines if you are spending several nights as it is very inexpensive. I liked its lication by the spirts park. Planes flying overhead would bother some, not me. They were not during the night. I enjoyed having Uma, a well behaved dog nearby. The views are fantastic. It has what you need. If steps are an issue you might be better off elsewhere.
Really incredible place! Comfortable and clean rooms, hot showers and clean bathrooms, fastest WiFi Ive seen pretty much anywhere outside of home thats stable throughout the building and full cooks kitchen. Great vibe and super easy to make pals! Loved it so much I extended for a month.
The noises of the close airport can be a bit too much sometimes, and the plastic coated pillows are useless for resting purposes, but this was a really nice place. If you like good kitchens and comfy rooftops, it is for u!
they have dorm, single room with shared bath room which is what i got. good value. a nice co living area up stairs, but did not get to enjoy it. was to busy enjoying colombia. do not flash electronics, and try a blend in. dress like the locals
Perfect place for a short stay or a long stay. Privacy and community both, whenever you feel like either. Immaculate and beautiful botanical garden of a terrace. Fastest and most stable Wifi you will find in Medellin or the world. Clean. Comfortable beds. Multiple fans per room. Tranquil location in Belen close to a swimming pool, parks, cafes, and a short walk to Laureles. Joel and JC are A+ humans.
Great place. everyone has their own code to get in. great people here. Most are digital nomads keeping chill during the week and lettin' loose during weekend with everyone invited. cooking classes. One of the best-supplied kitchens i've seen in a hostel----and i'm a chef.
If you work online and want a good party/work balance, this is the spot!
