Magic Bacalar is a very chilled-out hostel in an absolutely stunning lakeside setting. It is the perfect place to spend a couple of days relaxing on their pier. It has a range of options depending on what kind of room you're looking for and has a great range of common spaces.

The Location

Bacalar is a beautiful lakeside town, which has a number of nice spots to enjoy its famous aqua blue lake. If arriving by bus, the dropoff point is around a twenty-minute walk or five-minute taxi ride to the hostel. The hostel is down a side road and is visible from one of the main roads. The hostel is behind a large wooden fence, which can be locked out of hours. The hostel is located right on the lakeside and has its own private pier. The hostel is located around a fifteen-minute walk from the town's main plaza, where you can find the town's main shops, restaurants, and bars.

Rooms and Bathrooms

There are lots of different room and dorm options, and all beds come with a mosquito net which is needed at night. There are some dorm rooms that are based right by the lake and some a bit further back. The rooms are basic but clean and have plug sockets near the beds. There are no lockers in the rooms, but some in the communal area by the kitchen.

There is one large communal bathroom in the center of the hostel. This has multiple cubicles for the toilets and showers. The bathrooms are relatively clean and can be quite busy in the mornings. The shower is cold and has decent water pressure.

Common Spaces

The reception is located just outside the main hostel and has seating where you can eat breakfast in the morning. This is the only place in the hostel where you can connect to Wi-Fi, so it can be a bit busy. The hostel has numerous hammocks dotted around and there is a small communal kitchen that is kept in good condition.

The highlight of the communal space has to be the lakeside pier, which provides direct access to Bacalar's famous blue lake. This private pier has hammocks, deck chairs, and seating and is a beautiful place to watch the sunrise and sunset. It's a very tranquil area and perfect to spend the day relaxing and swimming in the lake. This is not the most social hostel, but you can still meet people and breakfast and on the pier.

Summary

Magic Bacalar is a great hostel to relax by the lakeside. The limited Wi-Fi can be a bit frustrating and it is a little out of town, but its beautiful setting makes up for this.
