The Yak Lake House is probably one of the best places at which we have ever stayed. Located right in front of the water, it has everything a backpacker needs -- kitchen, bar, social areas, places to chill, comfy beds, and a great vibe.

The Location

The hostel is located in the center of the little village of Bacalar and it is a ten-minute walk to reach the ADO or collectivo bus station that is on the main road. Most of not all travelers reach Bacalar by bus or collectivo, so it’s a great advantage that the hostel is next to it. In addition, it is only a ten-minute walk to the main bars and the only club that is open on weekends.

In addition the hostel is built in front of the lagoon and it has its own beach access with its own pier where you can chill, jump in the water, and start the boat tours.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Rooms have bunk beds and vary in numbers. Beds are very comfortable and each one has its own light and plug to charge. Each bed is provided a locker and it is very nice that guests don’t need to have their lock as it is given by the hostel. Both air conditioning and fan are in the room, with the former working only during nighttime. On a small note, we need to mention that rooms are quite small and with the backpacks on the floor, it becomes challenging to walk around, especially at night with the light off.

Bathrooms are en suite and showers are great with hot water coming at any time. The cleaning is well organized and happens several times a day, so the property looks always clean and new.

Common Spaces

There is a big kitchen available for guests with eight separate spaces for cooking, making it nice and easy for guests to prepare their own meals. Fridges and freezers are also available to store the stuff.

A welcome drink is given to each person and breakfast is included. There is a sofa around the reception area where people can chill when it’s too hot or rainy outside. The hostel has a great area with a private access to the lagoon, which has a bar; it's the perfect place to chill and meet other travelers. It is really easy to mingle and sometimes the staff organize events in the evening. It is not a real party hostel, as the bar closes at midnight and the vibe is more chilled than partying.

Summary

This place is recommended. It is a bit more expensive than other hostels in the area, but it does offer quality in many terms. The hostel tends to be sold out often, so it is advisable to book a few days in advance.

Location

From the Cancun airport, take the ADO bus to nearby Playa del Carmen or Tulum. At the bus terminal, change buses to continue down to Bacalar (approximately 4.5 hours total from the Cancun Airport). You will be dropped off on the highway and can take a 5-minute taxi ride to the St. Felipe Fort Museum. Facing the museum with the lagoon in front of you, turn left and walk to the corner. At the corner, turn right and walk down toward the lagoon. The Yak Lake House is the white building right there on the lagoon!
