Reggae Mansion Suites Kuala Lumpur just might be the best hostel in Southeast Asia. For the price of a hostel, you get a massive, super clean mansion with luxury facilities and an incredibly social atmosphere.
Now, the location is not the best. It isn't too far from the center, but it is just not one of the nicer or more happening places around Kuala Lumpur. Women should not be walking alone at night in the area and the atmosphere is not always the safest. Luckily, with all that Reggae Mansion has to offer, you will never have to leave the hostel for a good party. There are also security guards in and outside the hostel at all times to make you feel very safe. There is a Light Rapid Transit (LRT) station just five minutes away.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Reggae Mansion is huge -- so huge that it is easy to get lost in the different hallways and bridges leading to different levels. There are stairs as well as elevators to help you reach your room. Every piece of furniture is brand new and all the rooms and common spaces are cleaned on a daily basis.
There are several room choices, including private rooms or four-, six-, sixteen- or twenty-four-bed dorms. Rooms open with a keycard and a code. Each bed is like a mini-private room, with a thick curtain for privacy, very large mattress, private lamp, power socket, small mirror, and even a shelf behind it. Towels are included and each bed has its own spacious locker.
It is surprisingly very quiet for sleeping at night. There are surveillance cameras in the bigger dorms and security agents come checking at night and invite loud people to go to the bar or one of the common rooms. The only downside -- the rooms can get cold at night.
There are several private bathrooms on each floor. They each consist of a toilet, shower head, sink, and mirror. There are also separate toilets and water fountains on each floor.
Reggae Mansion has quite a few common spaces. To begin with, there is a rooftop bar with a view of the Menara TV tower and part of the Petronas. It boasts a great bar area, with shisha available, and good deals for hostel guests. There is also a pool table, BBQ space, dance floor with DJ playing every night, and even toilets so you don't have to go back inside. This bar is so cool that people staying at other hostels and hotels come here for a drink too.
Then there is the beautiful restaurant, where you get your complimentary breakfast every morning. It consists of tea, coffee, fresh fruit, toasts, butter and jams, sausages, and a very good hot dish that's different every day (it can be fried rice or noodles, or pancakes sometimes). You are totally allowed to sit there all day, even if you do not order anything.
There are several other common spaces throughout the building -- a computer space with free access, terraces, cosy sofas for relaxing, books for borrowing, and even a cinema room! There is Wi-Fi everywhere in the building.
Reggae Mansion is one of those hostels that is a good enough reason for you to come back to the city.
