Reggae Mansion Suites Kuala Lumpur Reviews

Reggae Mansion Suites Kuala Lumpur just might be the best hostel in Southeast Asia. For the price of a hostel, you get a massive, super clean mansion with luxury facilities and an incredibly social atmosphere.

The Location

Now, the location is not the best. It isn't too far from the center, but it is just not one of the nicer or more happening places around Kuala Lumpur. Women should not be walking alone at night in the area and the atmosphere is not always the safest. Luckily, with all that Reggae Mansion has to offer, you will never have to leave the hostel for a good party. There are also security guards in and outside the hostel at all times to make you feel very safe. There is a Light Rapid Transit (LRT) station just five minutes away.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Reggae Mansion is huge -- so huge that it is easy to get lost in the different hallways and bridges leading to different levels. There are stairs as well as elevators to help you reach your room. Every piece of furniture is brand new and all the rooms and common spaces are cleaned on a daily basis.

There are several room choices, including private rooms or four-, six-, sixteen- or twenty-four-bed dorms. Rooms open with a keycard and a code. Each bed is like a mini-private room, with a thick curtain for privacy, very large mattress, private lamp, power socket, small mirror, and even a shelf behind it. Towels are included and each bed has its own spacious locker.

It is surprisingly very quiet for sleeping at night. There are surveillance cameras in the bigger dorms and security agents come checking at night and invite loud people to go to the bar or one of the common rooms. The only downside -- the rooms can get cold at night.

There are several private bathrooms on each floor. They each consist of a toilet, shower head, sink, and mirror. There are also separate toilets and water fountains on each floor.

Common Spaces

Reggae Mansion has quite a few common spaces. To begin with, there is a rooftop bar with a view of the Menara TV tower and part of the Petronas. It boasts a great bar area, with shisha available, and good deals for hostel guests. There is also a pool table, BBQ space, dance floor with DJ playing every night, and even toilets so you don't have to go back inside. This bar is so cool that people staying at other hostels and hotels come here for a drink too.

Then there is the beautiful restaurant, where you get your complimentary breakfast every morning. It consists of tea, coffee, fresh fruit, toasts, butter and jams, sausages, and a very good hot dish that's different every day (it can be fried rice or noodles, or pancakes sometimes). You are totally allowed to sit there all day, even if you do not order anything.

There are several other common spaces throughout the building -- a computer space with free access, terraces, cosy sofas for relaxing, books for borrowing, and even a cinema room! There is Wi-Fi everywhere in the building.

Summary

Reggae Mansion is one of those hostels that is a good enough reason for you to come back to the city.

Really good

I've stayed here before and this was time just as good. Good showers and toilets (and lots of them), big beds that are clean, have a curtain and a power point each, lockers for bags in the room. The rooftop bar is great and the breakfast tastes amazing. I'll be staying here again for sure.

Lovely Place

I really like it there. It's a wonderful chill spot to go to. Clean, safe and great food. Lot's of excursions and touristy things to do. You got your own private bed/area/space/capsule thing. So you get your own privacy. There's books and there are a lot of bars and restaurants around. I enjoyed it. But it is one of those places where it might be more interesting if you had a buddy, not for lonely travelers like me. All in all, I liked it.

Reggae Mansion Kuala Lumpur is a one-of-a-kind hostel and part of the Reggae Hostel chain in Malaysia. The building is an exquisite colonial mansion situated in Chinatown and architecturally and esthetically it offers so much including fifteen private rooms and fifty-eight unique dormitory beds, all with air-conditioning and a ton of privacy that's greatly appreciated at the end of a hot day of touring.

The Location

Reggae Mansion is in an ideal neighbourhood of Kuala Lumpur, Chinatown. It is very close in walking distance to the Masjid Jamek (mosque), Central Market, Petaling Street (Chinatowns main street), and Sri Mahamariamman Temple. Plus, with the free "Pink" bus offered to KL locals and tourists you're minutes from other attractions and the best shopping that KL has to offer. The citys monorail and Light Rapid Transit (LRT) system is also only minutes away, making it very easy to get to and from the airport.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The rooms themselves are simple and offer security, since a code is required to enter. The dorms are the nicest we have ever encountered, with the beds being built in, providing cute cubbyholes with tons of privacy, light, and a cabinet located behind each mirror (which we would not have discovered if we hadnt accidentally pressed upon it). We could have stayed in them forever, however, the mattress is as hard as a rock and we swear we were sleeping on a box spring. Large lockers are provided under each bunk.

The bathrooms are very clean -- in fact the entire building is kept impeccably clean. A body soap/shampoo dispenser is provided and the bathroom doubles with a rain shower installed as well. We personally find it very effective. Each floor has wash basins to wash your face and brush your teeth and there are many bathrooms located on each floor.

Common Spaces

Reggae Mansion offers a few common spaces, two courtyards, and the rooftop bar. One courtyard is covered, the other partially; while both are spacious and somewhat airy, they both permit smoking and that can become quite overpowering at times. We would really have appreciated it if one was nonsmoking. Both courtyards have ample seating and work spaces. There are some great extras that the hostel offers -- with so may great facilities (very clean ones at that), you might begin to feel like youre in a hotel. That is, until you choose to watch a movie in their cinema or when the partying begins on their amazing rooftop bar, which is fantastic, with tons of seating, a few sun beds and a small bar. It turns into a full-out bar/disco in the evening in the warmth of the KL air with an incredible view of the KL Tower. It opens at 7 p.m.

Reggae Mansion has a full service restaurant/bar where free breakfast is served for paying guests at the hostel. It is also open to the public. There is no kitchen for guests to use and while the food is fantastic at the restaurant the prices are reminiscent of what we pay at home (not typical of Malaysia). If youre looking to save money on food and drink, this is not the place to patronize and our very expensive glass of wine went down in one gulp -- the smallest weve encountered in a while.

The owner has paid attention to the small details and many of the amenities youd expect are at no charge such as air conditioning, lockers, breakfast, and Wi-Fi, but the hostel also offers a plethora of items at a small charge (laundry, iPad rental, internet on the house computers, and everything from electrical converters to hair straightening irons). Both check in and check out is at noon.

Summary

If youre looking for a party hostel or a full service hostel, which will undoubtedly surpass all expectations, then the Reggae Mansion is not to be passed up. We would recommend it to anyone coming to Kuala Lumpur -- just dont forget your earplugs, as this is a party hostel and the music is loud till 3 a.m.! You may also run into loud travelers coming to bed looking to keep the party going, so be prepared!

Reggae Mansion Exterior at Night Courtyard #1 Courtyard #2 Dorm Room Bathroom Rooftop Bar

Good place but too loud at night

Good -- Location, attracts a good crowd, cafe food is amazing, laundry is very reasonable, good hot water, soft beds and pillows. Bad -- Loud at night. They warn you they're a "party hostel", which is just code for "our walls suck and we won't turn down the music". Slightly overpriced. Lots of happy hour/food special rules that are not posted, silly, and seem to change daily. staff unreasonable about their enforcement. Conclusion -- Stay here in KL, but make sure your room is as far away from the rooftop bar as possible ... it's LOUD.
