A real home
Perfect for quick airport access, 15 mins on bus 200E. Home owner lives there and shares her kitchen. Beautifully well decorated, super clean, and owner has recycling bins for everything. A quiet neighbourhood.
Hostel Relax, this quirky, home-style hostel, is a rather unique experience in hosteling. The friendly owner lives on the upper floor of the hostel, sharing the common spaces with the hostel, and providing lots of information on local sights, Hungarian history, and interesting life experiences under both Communism and capitalism. The hostel offers guests a welcoming place to stay in Budapest, with full amenities and clean, comfortable accommodations.
The Location
Although located in a quiet, residential neighborhood rather far from downtown and restaurants, Hostel Relax is conveniently located near BUD Airport (about twenty minutes away via public transport) and one of the main Budapest bus/metro stations, Kobana Kispest. While there are not many shops or restaurants within easy walking distance, it is only a few minutes' walk from public transport, with three bus stops within a less-than-ten-minute walk of the hostel. The closest bus stop is only a few minutes' walk away, and is the best stop for going to the city and to the airport via Kobana Kispest bus/metro station (less than ten minutes). There is also a shopping mall at the Kobana Kispest station, with a large grocery store and many shops and restaurants. Following the directions given by the hostel and the painted signs along the sidewalk, the hostel is relatively easy to find. Although the area along the main road nearest to the hostel looks rundown, we found it to be completely safe and quiet, even late at night.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Hostel Relax has three clean, cheery sleeping rooms (two spacious dorm rooms and a small, private room) as well as two bathrooms. Each dorm room has a couch or easy chair in which to relax, a table with chairs, and several bunk beds, with windows looking out over the garden. The dorm beds are clean and comfortable, and the hostel is very quiet at night, allowing us to get a full night's sleep without the noise and night-time interruptions found in larger, centrally located hostels. The bathrooms are clean and tidy, and there is plenty of hot water. The larger bathroom has a separate, enclosed toilet and sink, a washing machine, two shower stalls, and a large sink with a hairdryer available for use. There are plenty of hooks to hang things in the shower, and two curtains (inner and outer), to keep things dry whilst showering. The smaller bathroom has a toilet and sink.
Common Spaces
The main common area is an enclosed porch at the entry to the hostel, but in summertime it's too hot for hanging out during the day. The common area is small, but since the hostel only accommodates ten guests, it works. The kitchen is clean, with a stove, microwave, fridge, and electric kettle, as well as plenty of dishes and cutlery for guests to use. The small kitchen table could only seat three at a time, but there is an additional table in the main common area just outside the kitchen, so up to ten people could eat at one time. The garden area looks nice, but lacks seating, so we were unable to fully utilize the space during our stay. There is no curfew, so guests are free to come and go as they please. If you are looking for a party atmosphere or a place to meet lots of other guests, better look elsewhere, since Hostel Relax is geared toward those looking for a quiet, relaxing place to stay.
Summary
Overall, Hostel Relax is a unique, quiet place to stay. It is in a residential area conveniently located near BUD Airport and a major bus/metro station, and is relatively easy to find. Although some may find the hostel owner living on site to be somewhat intrusive at times, we found it helpful to be able ask questions and get good information. We enjoyed our stay at Hostel Relax and found it to be a very convenient location for quickly getting to/from the airport and a metro/bus station. For those looking for fast, easy access to the airport and a good night's sleep, we recommend Hostel Relax as a friendly, quiet, convenient place to stay during a visit to Budapest.
