Description

The Hostelz.com Review

Hotel Lodi Hostel is a basic hostel outside the city center with clean accommodations and great staff. It is run more like a hotel with several dorm rooms. Note that its name on many maps and at the front door is "Hotel Lodi", but there are dorm rooms available.

The Location

It is located in a quiet residential neighborhood, not too far from several city attractions and close to bus lines and metro to reach the city center. Hotel Lodi is marked with a sign next to the door that is visible from the street. The neighborhood is fairly safe and there are several restaurants and a supermarket nearby. The train station (Termini) and bus station (Tiburtina) are a fifteen-minute bus ride (take line fifty or one hundred fifty) from the hostel. While the "Lodi" metro station is close to the hostel, this station will not take you in the direction of the city center or transportation stations. To use the metro to reach the city's attractions, the Garibaldi metro station is a twenty-minute walk from the hostel. To reach the city center, there are a couple of frequent bus routes that pass near the hostel.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Hotel Lodi mainly offers private room accommodations, but two four-bed dorm rooms are also available. The dorms are basic with metal bunk beds, small tables, and large storage lockers. Each bed has a small lamp. There are many outlets available in the room. The doors are generally unlocked and individual guests do not get keys to the room. Wi-Fi is available throughout the hostel, but can be slow or difficult to connect to from the second floor of the hostel. Rooms are cleaned well every day. The single private bathroom is located in the hallway outside of the room. Sometimes guests have to wait to use the bathroom or shower since there is only one per each four-bed dorm. Bathrooms are spacious and clean, and the shower operates well with hot water and strong water pressure.

Common Spaces

The main common area is a beautiful outdoor patio and garden with chairs and fruit trees. In the wintertime, this area is not often used. Near the reception, there is a common room with tables and chairs, a computer, and a book exchange. This is also a nice space to eat breakfast in the morning for a small charge. There is a kitchen, but it is not a typical communal hostel kitchen -- staff are strict about guests not cooking. The kitchen is mainly use by the hostel staff, but you can ask to store food there or use the microwave, plates and utensils, or the sink. This is not a particularly social hostel. Most guests are making a quick stop in Rome or looking for budget accommodation rather than a social experience.

Summary

Hotel Lodi offers comfortable dorms, some common space, and very helpful staff members available at all times. It is a good place to stay if you're on a budget and don't mind taking the bus or walking a bit to reach transportation hubs and the city center. The staff will offer their help with every part of your stay, including recommendations and advice.

BEST place to stay in Rome!
I've been to Rome several times and this hotel was my favorite by far! We loved the patio area in the back, computer availability, fabulous breakfast and AMAZING staff!! They recommended several local restaurants to eat at that were equally wonderful. It's a little way outside the city center which we actually loved being able to get away from the hustle and bustle of the touristy areas and see a little more of local Rome. Fabulous place, fabulous price! Definitely recommend it!

Location Location Location
2 Stars for free wi-fi and breakfast. 1 Star for friendly and helpful hostel staff. Location of this hostel is very inconvenient and there is only one bathroom on one floor. I think that staying near Termini Station or near the center of the city would be best.

Hostel Lodi has everything you'd expect from a hostel just outside the center of Rome, apart from an oven/hobs for food cooking. There is a microwave and fridge to prepare food, which makes up for this partly. They have the best free breakfast we have ever had at a hostel -- fresh coffee (choice of anything from espresso to latte) a massive variety of pastries (you get two so you can take one for lunch), and a choice of cereals. There are two free PCs and free Wi-Fi that works very well. It is a little cold in the evenings so it's good to have a warm jumper if you're staying in the colder months. The Location Hostel Lodi is located about a thirty-minute walk from the Colosseum in Rome and about fifteen minutes from the nearest metro stop. The area is quite safe to walk around at night, so it's not a problem doing these walks late at night. There is an amazing little market-style shop nearby for fruit and vegetables, which is incredibly cheap also. It's quite accessible from the nearby train stations whether on foot (if you don't have too much luggage) or by public transport. Rooms and Bathrooms The rooms are very clean, and the beds are made for you every day. Our bed was really comfortable, but many of the other guests did mention their mattresses were a bit saggy in the middle or the sides. There are lockers for all your stuff, for which they provide a padlock if you don't have your own. The bathrooms are all shared between the dorm rooms (private rooms have their own) and are kept very clean also. The bathrooms have shelves for all your stuff and a bathmat that is washed every day -- not something that happens a lot in our experience. Common Spaces The common spaces in Hostel Lodi could be improved -- the main place to sit in the evening is a little cold, as there is a door that opens straight out into the garden, which is great for the summer and for smokers, but not so good for the winter. There are no sofas to sit on and relax -- just a few chairs and tables -- however, no one seemed to let this stop them socialising. The common area is open all night, but expect to be told to quiet down after 11:30 p.m. Summary This hostel has the best hostel breakfast ever, free and reliable Wi-Fi, is a bit out of the center, and with very friendly staff. This is definitely a good place to stay if you don't mind a bit of a walk and like to mix a bit more with the locals than with the tourists.

Highly Recommend
Staying in Hostel Lodi helped make my stay in Rome a fantastic one! I went with a group of five people. Four of us got to be in our own room while one of us was in a separate room upstairs. We knew this when we booked so we were fine with it. Our four person room had its own bathroom including a shower which was a great surprise! The room and bathroom was very clean and the shower had hot water and pressure. The free breakfast was yummy and the staff were exceptionally nice and helpful! They give great advice on what to see in the city and one night even sat with us to chat and drink wine. The common room is nice and has computers with free internet access although it is a little slow. Only downside is that it is a bit far from the metro station (20 minutes even though they tell you 10) but the walk is worth it!
