La Buena Onda is a great new hostel, managed by very knowledgeable and friendly people, where travellers can relax or organise excursions in the area.
Hostel La Buena Onda is located two blocks from Parque Morazan, the main square of the city. From the bus station it is a bit of a walk, 20 minutes at least, or a short, cheap taxi ride. The street can be noisy, and while the private rooms are little affected, in the dorm, facing the main road, you may hear the disturbing sound of a roaming car engine passing by.
Rooms and Bathrooms
There are private rooms on two floors, with and without ensuite bathrooms and one eight-bed dorm on the upper floor. The dorm offer the biggest lockers you may ever find in a hostel! The lockers are in a separate room and every locker is actually a big closet with a free padlock.
The dorm has an ensuite bathroom, but guests can use also another bathroom downstairs. The shower is cold, and in hilly Matagalpa it would have been nice to have a warm shower in the evening. You are given a towel to rent for free.
The bunk beds are solid, with very comfortable mattress. Pillows are thin, but comfortable anyway.
The reception and the garden are big and comfortable areas, with plenty of sitting spaces and hammocks. The living room, which has satellite TV and sofas, is big and cosy.
On the upper floor there is a large corridor with rocking chairs and a balcony with more rocking chairs and another hammock overlooking the main street. Wi-Fi connection is one of the fastest we found in Nicaragua.
The place is small and Matagalpa is a place where most tourists spend their day in the hills around town, so the vibe is quiet, mellow and relaxing.
La Buena Onda is managed by a Dutch-Nicaraguan couple, who works with all the tour operators in town, so they can book any kind of excursion for you. They also manage a gift shop next door. The reception is open 24 hours.
Free amenities include purified water and coffee, which is indeed of great quality and not the usual instant coffee or watered down you usually find in hostels. Also there is a mini bar, with fresh drinks at supermarket prices. The kitchen is big, but officially only for staff, although anybody could use it while we were staying.
Hostel La Buena Onda is a great hostel, with a superb staff and a relaxing vibe.

Hostel La Buena Onda Reviews from the Web
Nice and relaxed place in Matagalpa, close to the central park. It has a nice internal courtyard with hammocks, a balcony with hammocks and swing chairs, a large kitchen, and useful tour/sightseeing information. The lady running the place is super friendly. There weren't many people when I was there, but you can do surprisingly a lot of stuff around Matagalpa (try Selva Negra! and maybe the waterfall). Highly recommend to stop in Matagalpa here for an authentic Nica experience!
Amazing place and staff
Great hostel. Friendly family. Best place to stay in Matagalpa.
Nice hostel in Matagalpa. The staff was very helpful and it is centrally located.
Liked: Friendly welcome, good breakfast, great bed and shower. Didn't like: -
Liked: Francisca the receptionist was very helpful, made calls for me to find out answers to my questions and gave me good directions. LOVE the rabbit and the hammocks are good. The couch room is nice too. The beds are comfy and good lock up space. Met a lot of nice people there. Didn't like: No free breakfast with the dorms and no hot water at all. Didn't know that, although it does say that in the write up. Supposed to have hot water in private rooms but the people in there said no, totally cold. Need hot shower in that climate.
La Buena Onda provides all of the amenities that you are looking for (Free morning coffee, free wireless internet, outdoor patio with hammocks, cable tv, balcony, laundry service, great book exchange, movies, and more!) and also serves as a great base to explore the surrounding mountains, waterfalls, and coffee farms.
We promote the plethora of eco-tourism destinations in the area and support local artisans, producers of fair-trade products, and especially local farms.
So grab a coffee and relax with us and experience real Nica life!
