Not impressed
So I get to this hostel last night, the only place I can afford and over the phone they failed to mention their "no Albertan ID" policy. I was in the process of hitchhiking through Alberta and toward Vancouver so I can fly out to Tokyo by week's end and although I was proving I was traveling (willing to show flight receipts), the receptionist apologized and said the owner's policy was "travelers only." This is the first time I've ever come online to write a review because they preferred keeping the bed empty over night and putting me out on the street. Being easter long weekend I couldn't find any other accommodations and was forced to spend my entire night in a 24-hour Mcdonalds, now I'm about to take off from Calgary completely depleted of energy because of this frivolous and stupid policy. Disappointed with the lack of welcome to their guests.
Nice place to start
Really nice place to start your stay at Calgary. People are friendly and helpful staff is awesome. And you even get free breakfast and laundry. Location is really good to since it is close to downtown and you can easily walk there. I enjoyed my weeks here a lot.
Overall, Wicked Hostels - Calgary is an amazing place to stay in Calgary and is highly recommended as the place to stay when you are in town!
The Location
Located right over the road from the Stampede Grounds in Calgary and the train station, the Wicked Hostel is close to bars and restaurants, around the corner from a basic supermarket, and within walking distance to the downtown center.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel has two floors -- the bottom floor has two dorm rooms and all of the other dorm rooms are located on the upstairs floor. The rooms are clean, comfortable, and have good-quality beds and linen. There are gender-separate bathrooms upstairs with a toilet and three showers in each; other toilets are available on the second floor and the main floor. In the girls' bathroom, they have a box of hair dryers, hair straighteners, and curling wands as well as leftover shampoo and conditioner for guests to use.
Common Spaces
The main common space is on the bottom floor of the hostel, which has a large modern kitchen for cooking that is stacked with utensils as well as an open dining room with table and couches for relaxing and getting to know people. The kitchen does free breakfast every morning, inclusive of free vegemite for all of those Australians who are longing for a bit of a taste of home. The kitchen also has a free food cupboard that is well equipped with spices and herbs for cooking.
This hostel is amazing and has thought of so many things that other hostels have not in terms of convenience and comfort. One of the great things about this hostel is free laundry. As a guest, you bag your laundry, and the staff will wash it for you for free in the afternoons after the bed linen is washed. They also have computers free for guest use if you do not have Wi-Fi and a printer is attached so that you can print any bus tickets or things that you may need off the printer for free too.
They have quite the reputation for being a party hostel with a board on the wall that details events for the coming days/week. The wall on the way in is a collage of parties and good times had at the hostel and can be quite funny. At times they run other events like paintballing, floating down the river in the summer months, movies, and other outings for the guests. It is incredibly well run and a load of fun!
Summary
The owner, Jeff, is around a fair amount of the time and is super fun and helpful. The staff here are also great and will help you with any questions that you have or things that you might need around the area. There is a locked door at the front that you will need a key to enter the building to ensure security of the hostel.
Everything you need
I had a very friendly welcome. As the hostel was so close to the Stampede Grounds, I could even visit the Stampede on Wednesday, although my flight was due from Calgary International at 3 pm the same day.
