Harmony Hostel

The Hostelz.com Review

At the price, along with the relatively small size of the place and the amount of sociability that this space in the city has to offer, Harmony Hostel may be the choice for the young traveler touring these exciting and inspirational global nooks.

The Location

The location of Harmony Hostel is in central Istanbul, among many other hostels and hotels. There are many economy corner shops and restaurants, accommodating budgets from shoestring to frivolous. The hostel is only a five- to ten-minute walk to the river, which divides the city.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The hostel rooms are large and spacious, by any measure, and this spaciousness is perhaps the biggest plus of Harmony Hostel. Some bugs are seen on the premises, but for the price, this is another aspect of the cost/benefit ratio for fellow travelers. We believe the hostel is staffed by a family -- when we arrived, we were greeted outside by a child of about eleven -- and throughout our stay, the staff are very helpful with any request. The person working the front desk is young and despite not being able to find our reservation, which we made online, he helped us to our room even though we arrived hours before our expected arrival time.

Common Spaces

There is a lovely, top-level loft connected to the terrace of Harmony Hostel -- on our first night there -- a Saturday night -- about thirty people have congregated here for a just-cooked pasta dinner. The travelers vary in origin; this is primarily a youth hostel, but a much wider array of ages are represented. People come up to the top loft for many reasons including eating food, social congregating, and accessing the internet. If you favor peace and quiet over active social life, Harmony Hostel may not be the top choice. However, if you are looking for companionship and live action, look no further. Despite the intonations throughout the top loft, they appear to largely remain in this designated space.

Outside our hostel room is the noisy street, on which a local tram operates most hours of the day. For quiet, this is another drawback of the hostel, but you must take into account the city and location in which you are visiting. This is part of Istanbul, which is inundated by fast-paced economics where every day is an event unto itself.

Good value for money! Excellent location. Helpful staff.
I stayed for three days at the hostel in the month of September. It is centrally located and close to many tourist attractions/Metro station. The breakfast was ok, though tea and coffee always seemed to be in short supply. The staff was friendly and helpful. The stay was comfortable. My dorm smelled of stalled air, but then again, it was all male dorm! Overall, good value for the money.

Fair for the price.
The location of this hostel is convenient to the sights, but it is on a busy street and there is some noise from it in the dorms. The rooftop has a good view, and the drink prices are good. Beds contain storage areas under the mattresses. The elevator was not working to the upper floors when I was there, and the receptionist gave me the wrong code to punch in to gain access to my room. Breakfast offers bread, cucumbers, tomatoes, olives, cheese, and hardboiled eggs.

Harmony Hostel was amazing ... the location was right next to everything and the staff was ridiculously helpful. You gotta try to get Mahmoud to do a fish bbq which was amazing plus he, Stella and Ahmed know all the cheapest places to buy things around. Overall great experience and would love to do it again. Highly recommended.

Great place
This hostel has a great atmosphere. It's very easy to meet other travelers here -- a real bonus for single travelers. Free meals, great multilingual staff, near the bus-line, walking distance to most major attractions. I'd go back there to stay in a heartbeat.
Simply perfect!
Harmony hostel has it all. From lockers in the dorms to wireless internet on the rooftop. It has brilliant views of the Galata tower across the Golden Horn. Its located close to the Grand and Spice Bazaars and also walking distance to the railway station and ferry pier. Omar is very hospitable and makes a smashing breakfast (free) for his guests every morning. A small kitchen if you would like to make your own meals. Hookah pipes aka nargile are available. Well worth every Lira!

More like a home than a hostel
We stayed at Harmony Hostel for the whole of our week stay in Istanbul and couldn't have felt more at home. The staff are incredibly welcoming and laid back -- Canan in particular made us feel part of the Harmony family. The hostel itself is great -- cosy enough to meet people every day, central as you can get and good value with free breakfast and dinner. We love these guys.
