Derry City Independent Hostel - Steve's Backpackers Reviews

Awesome, honest, chilled out place

This was my very first hostel experience and I absolutely loved it. First day there was bbq night for 3 pound, it was good. I had a private room. I loved the views from the staircase. Everything is very clean, owner is awesome and chilled and willing to give you honest advice for the rest of your journey. Great place!

Homelike

Very close to a home stay feel about the place. Steve is like a great uncle. Very helpful, laid back, hospitable. Clean for an older property. Bed was saggy but cosy. Not a party hostel, but with thin walls you'll want ear plugs.

Very good

Very good, beautiful common area, cosy room. Problem with getting the water warm for the shower but excellent place in general.

Derry City Independent Hostel

We booked this hostel on the basis of past visits, and once again we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Kylie gave us her usual cheery welcome. Our room was warm and comfortable despite the cold weather, and there was always plenty of hot water. The atmosphere was superb, and with a great pub just across the road, it is really quite the best hostel in Ireland.

Would definitely stay here again!

We loved our stay here at the Derry City Independent Hostel. Our host Kylie was super helpful, friendly, an experienced traveller and quite professional -- all qualities that echo throughout this hostel. Kylie and her husband have thought of many things other hostels overlook, obviously a result of their travel backpacker-backgrounds. We stayed at their location aimed at couples around the corner from the main hostel. The interior was clean, well-kept, stylishly decorated and felt like home away from home. The location was brilliant and the tips about our surroundings from Kylie were greatly appreciated. We noticed that there were just about no posters or obvious suggestions for tours/pubs that you see at other hostels, which made us feel that her tips were genuine with little if any biases. Was so great to have a continental breakfast included (tea/coffee/yummy bread/cereal/jams/milk). We would happily stay here again and will definitely recommend it to others.

Hostel had an atmosphere in heaps

this small hostel really stands out from the crowd. the staff are uber friendly and the owners travel souvenirs like the buddha statues, indian wall hangings, and hand painted tables are the sort of things that more hostels should have. they really added to the sense that you were traveling and not just staying in a travelodge sort of place that you could find 2 miles from home. definitely stay here if spending a night in derry.

Derry City Independent Hostel - Steve's Backpackers has been in this location for four years but used to be known as Steve's Backpacker's Hostel. It has a very relaxed, indie backpacker style. It is very clean and the guests seem very laid back. The owners are extremely friendly and helpful in booking tours, leading pub crawls, and helping guests in any way that that can. Breakfast and linens are included with the nightly charge but you have to rent a towel if you don't have one. There is a left luggage available.

The Location

The location is excellent. It is a couple of minutes walk to the center of town, the bus station, and the Derry City Walls tourist attraction. It is very easy to find.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The rooms are six- and ten-bed dorms with shared bathrooms. The rooms and bathrooms are clean and there is adequate hot water and space to move around. There are no lockers.

Common Spaces

The common areas are very nice. Once lounge has a TV and DVD and the other has free internet. There is a book exchange. The owners are backpackers and they have decorated the common areas in a Thai, Indian, and Moroccan sort of style that is very fun and funky. Everything is bright and cheerful. There is a kitchen for self-catering. There is no laundry available.

Summary

This hostel has car parking and safety deposit available and takes credit cards. The owners are extremely helpful to guests, giving lots of recommendations for things to see and do. It is a good value since it also includes breakfast. It is a great place to meet people and socialize.

LETS GO IRELAND 2005

Our super-friendly staff are guaranteed to give you an amazing welcome and introduction to our fair city. Our hostel ,situated in Great James Street, has the best possible location directly in the city centre. Hostelz.com customers seem to think we are doing a good job as they rate it as the best hostel in IRELAND.

TOP HOSTEL IN IRELAND

With an average Hostelz.com rating of over 90%, Hostelz.com customers, have voted us as their top rated hostel in IRELAND. Have a look at some of the reasons why...

STAFF

Our staff are totally committed to ensuring you have the best time possible in Derry. They are all backpackers who have fallen in love with this great city and will do their utmost to see that you love it too. Everything from taking you out to the pub to doing your laundry.

WELCOME

From the very start the 'Steves Backpackers' team have justifiably earned the reputation as being some of the friendliest staff in any hostel around. You can be sure that you will receive the best welcome possible. You will be welcomed with tea or coffee and a smile. We will then provide you with a free city map and show you all the hotspots, ie murals, city walls, pubs, restaurants etc. (everything is literally around the corner from us.)
LOCATION ! LOCATION ! LOCATION !

FREE STUFF

Free tea & coffee comes as standard in most hostels in the North of Ireland, we offer that gladly.

However, being travellers ourselves we realised the advantage of FREE BROADBAND INTERNET AND FREE WiFi .
Many years ago and we were the first hostel in Ireland to offer this facility. Since then a couple of others have copied us, but not many!

FREE BREAKFAST for us has always been another standard - we realise the hassle of carrying a pint of milk and a bag of sugar in your backpack.

OUR WORLD FAMOUS 'ALL YOU CAN EAT BARBEQUES'

Most nights during summer we offer 'all you can eat' barbeques (burgers, sausages, chicken wings, veggie burgers, bread, sauces, etc).
Cost is just 2 POUNDS and of course the craic is mighty. These usually lead onto our organised pub crawls. FUN. FUN. FUN.

ORGANISED PUB CRAWLS

Every night a member of staff will round up those who are interested and take them out on a rollicking Irish pub crawl.
We usually head for the pubs offering the best cheap drinks promotions, then head onto the live music pubs or clubs. This is a great way to get out and meet the locals. Derry people are reknowned for being very friendly and this is a great way to meet them or hang out with other backpackers.

FREE DERRY TOURS

Every day organised tours of the Bogside, run by the acclaimed Free Derry Tours, leave from our hostel. These are tours conducted by local people from the Bogside, giving you a unique first-hand insight into the sad events of Bloody Sunday, the Battle of the Bogside, the many political murals and life in Derry during the troubles.

'Free Derry Tours.....recommended.' Lonely Planet Europe 2005

ALADINS CAVE...........

Over the last few years we travelled to many exotic places, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Turkey , Morrocco, Syria, Egypt, to name but a few and from these travels we have brought back lots of bits and pieces to decorate our hostels.. We have transformed our dining room into a an indian-style dining room, a virtual Aladins Cave with low tables and low seats, lots of beautiful hangings, and many amazing artefacts scattered around the room. You will be transported to another time and another place .
Which after all, if you are a traveller is where you want to be.

SO WHERE DO YOU WANT TO BE?

Come and stay with us and you will fall in love with Derry.
Who says so? Well for a start you do. You have consistently voted us as the top hostel in Northern Ireland, but other people also agree. You will find our hostel highly acclaimed in every major guide book: Lonely Panet , Lets Go, Rough Guide , Routarde , MTV, Neos , Moon Guides , etc.

See you soon!
