Youth Hostel Zagreb is a budget-friendly, large hostel managed by Hostelling International and is perfect for backpackers who want somewhere reasonably quiet to stay with no frills.
This hostel has a great location just a ten-minute walk to the main square of Zagreb, so you can easily see all of the sights on foot. The Zagreb train station is located right at the end of the street, and if you are arriving by long distance bus it is about a fifteen-minute walk or a quick tram trip to the bus station. The hostel also has its own off-street parking, which is convenient for those arriving by car. Zagreb has many delicious restaurants, many of which are located around the hostel. You can also find supermarkets on this street too and the train station has a shopping centre as well where you can find other food options.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Zagreb Youth Hostel has both dorm and private rooms that range in size. Dormitories are quite small with just three to six beds in each room. Each bed has a locker and you can find a small desk and chair in each dorm room. Private rooms are very basic and quite narrow. They are available in single, twin, triple, and quad (all with single beds or bunks). You also have a small desk and a cupboard in most rooms. Air conditioning is not available in the rooms, so it can get very hot and stuffy, as the small desk size fan can't keep the room cool. You also have to make your own bed even in the private rooms which is difficult as the sheets are too small. The hostel policy is to also leave the key at reception every time you leave, which can get annoying if reception is busy or if you are sharing one key among everyone in the dorm.
Some of the private singles and twins come with a compact, en suite bathroom or a sink in the room. For everyone else, it is shared bathrooms on each floor that only have one shower each, so if it's busy you could be waiting a while, and the bathrooms tend to get a bit dirty later on in the day.
This is not a hostel for socialising, as the only common area is a small lounge area that would fit just a handful of people near the reception area. Vending machines with hot and cold drinks are available in the lobby. And a microwave and refrigerator are available on request behind reception. Luggage storage is also available if you need to leave your bags to do some exploring.
Free Wi-Fi is available but it is a fairly poor connection that would constantly drop out; you can also use the public computers in reception. The overall vibe of the hostel is quite sterile and it is in desperate need of some updating. As it's a part of Hostelling International, you also need to pay an extra charge if you aren't a member and you might also find some large groups staying in the hostel.
This is a good option if you want a basic room at a budget price close to transport options and you aren't expecting to meet too many other travelers.

Only location is good, others are not good at all
Under 37 degree C (hot weather), no airconditioner. Room is in the west, strong sunshine rose the temperature of room, unable to sleep. Lift is out dated, not easy to handle especially when carried luggage bags. Working attitude of staff was bad, not polite. I will NOT recommend others to stay in this YH.
Hong Kong China
Omladinski hostel is for students who are not so demanding. Staff is nice if you are nice. they have common room with tv, and wireless in the lobby. Room and bathroom were clean, and cleaning lady was really friendly. they have parking place, so my car was save. we stayed there for 4 days, and it was great. If you expect room service, go to the hotel.
we had a lot of fun, and hostel was nice to stay in for 3 nights. location is GREAT!
Worst HI Hostel
Pricey and worst standard of Hostel in the world.
Location is great, nothing else is
Location is great but nothing else is. This hostel is fairly unique in my experience in that it provides neither breakfast included in the price, nor any self-catering facilities whatsoever, leaving your only option to eat out every meal. There is free internet, but only on one computer for the entire hostel of up to several hundred people -- queues were epic, I waited over an hour. There is also only one male and one female shower per whole floor, which could be fifty people or so -- again you can imagine the queues. There are no social areas or common rooms. They only provide one key for each dormitory room so you are reliant on the last person to lock the room on their way out -- very unsecure. Worst hostel I stayed at in three weeks around eastern Europe.
Could have been worse, could have been much better
My boyfriend and I stayed at this hostel in August. The check-in man wasn't very friendly or helpful. There were not secure lockers with keys in our dorm. We also only had one key to the dorm (which slept six people in it). The only positive factor was the cleanliness. Other than that it was a bit of a dive, was extremely hot, and was dull and depressing. Probably wouldn't stay there again. It is literally a cheap bed for not many kuna. You get what you pay for!
This one is a dump.
This is one of the worst HI hostels that I've stayed at. You shower in a puddle because the drains don't work well. The bathrooms are dirty and have not been adequately maintained. The mattresses are old and dirty. The are no curtains on the windows -- so no privacy from your neighbors across the street, and the street light shines into the room. Find somewhere else to stay.
The worst hostel we stayed in on our three-week trip.
Very convenient for the railway station and the centre of Zagreb but that is it's best feature! They would only take Croatian cash despite the HI web site saying they take credit cards. We stayed in a double room which was noisy and the shower room was dirty with rotting wood and a rusty shower. The shower room door would not close without extreme effort. Would not stay here again.
The location is convenient enough, being under 10 minutes from the train station and just down the block from a market. It's another 10-minute walk to the city center. There are keys for 24 hour access and luggage storage for after you check out (9am!). The place seems a bit like an old hotel, the key word being old, with no real common room. The owners can be helpful when they want to be, though I'm pretty sure they like making fun of some guests in Croatian while they were checking in.
The largest dorms in this HI hostel have 6 beds, which are functional but not the most comfortable. Bathrooms are mostly clean, though run down. It has five floors, but there is an elevator. All rooms are single-sex. There's no breakfast. This hostel is relatively cheap and in a good location, but it's probably never been called "nice." It makes you want to go out and see the city. Safety is not an issue however, Zagreb is very safe.
We stayed for 2 separate nights, room was enough but dirty, as we went to push the key into the lock, it just opened. Our en-suite toilet hadnt been flushed when we arrived and the shower was disgusting.
Although Beds, sheets and towels seemed clean enough, the room was fairly hot and the only thing to keep us cool was an incredibly dusty fan.
Staff were really nice on check in and when handing keys in when leaving the hostel in the day etc, but woman who checked us out on our second night was fairly r
HI Hostel Zagreb was somewhere cheap to spend a few nights but nothing more. Staff were rude, I had to sit outside our dorm for over an hour because someone else had taken the key & not given to reception. Only 1 key per dorm which means that the security isnt that great. Dirty showers & toilets, didnt even have the shower head hung up. Rooms were dirty just had a dusty fan to keep us cool on the warm nights. No atmosphere & tried to ask for recommendations but didnt get anywhere.
Everything in the shower was broken, you couldnt put your clothes on a nice dry place, because all the clothes hooks are broken down. Also, there is no airconditioning in the room, so this caused my pillow to get soaking wet. There is also only one key of the room, which is really inconvenient. I would definitely recommend spend a little bit more money on a hostel, so you have a nice stay!
no AC in the room, its crazy, can not sleep in there.
Terrible place! The only good thing is the distance from the station. The staff was very unwelcoming and just plain rude (girl behind the counter just sitting om her phone and ignoring anyone who needed something). The rooms are dirty and VERY hot. It was about 38 degrees in our room at night and we only had a dusty fan to keep us cool. There was no kitchen either. The hostel did not feel safe, the doors of the room would open by themselves if they were not locked from the inside. Maybe in cooler periods th
Staff were rude. There was no security as anybody could get the room key by asking. The bathrooms were dirty and the ceilings had mold. My bed was covered in dead bugs and dirt when I arrived. There was no air conditioning, and the small fan sent dust everywhere when we turned it on. Couldn't use our own locks for lockers. Internet was bad. The showers either didn't have a lock or a clothes peg. The whole place was run down. The only good thing was the price.
I do NOT recommend this place if you are a solo female traveller. I arrived and was told I am the only person in a 3 person female dorm, but people may, or may not arrive in the night. This is fine, but the issue is there is only one key. So all night I had to leave the door unlocked incase someone arrived which was SO unsafe. Anyone could come in! It should automatically lock when closed and people should be able to have a key to enter if they are in the room. I also entered the female washroom and there were males in there. I felt extremely itchy from the beds too and had so many bites. Did not sleep a peep at all! There were also males just stood outside if you looked out the window and the bar across the road was noisy. The only good thing was the fan in the room. No activities for guests advertised or explained at front desk.
Perfect place when you're traveling by train. We stayed for 2 nights, it was really hot, so we appreciated the fan (no airco, unfortunately, only on the lobby).
The staff was always very friendly and helpful, they gave us the best tip to travel with a modern tram (airco) to the Maximir park.
As normal in a hostel: you can see some damage, but the rooms and bathroom were clean.
No kitchen, only a microwave and a fridge. But dining out is not expensive, so no reason to cook for yourself ;-)
The place was quite dirty and had no AC in the rooms so it was very very hot at night. It was good value for money tho as the price was very good. Kitchen is very limited and location is great.
Great location, very clean room and bathrooms
Really nice in general. Would do well with AC however.
Nice place, I only stayed one night as a stop over so I didnt see what the place had to offer, but the rooms were nice and clean and checkin/out easy.
The location is fantastic, right in front of the train station, but the rooms are not really large, and it is kind of dirty. Also the staff is not really nice.
Great location, thats the most positive thing about the hostel. We booked a private ensuite and the toilet was moldy. The building is old and it shows, but its close to the center.
Good experience! Lack of atmosphere was not ideal but you can go to the city centre for that easily
The hostel is good for some quick overnighting, however, the room was way too hot, and it was difficult to sleep crammed in a small dorm without ac. Also, the bathrooms were not exactly in the best shape. In terms of value for money, it is fine, and it is also in a great location next to public transport.
Close to main train station, very basic room and bathrooms which is fine just for one night. Staff was helpful !
No kitchen or laundry facilities but thats okay considering how cheap it is.
Big downside was there is no air conditioning so the room was boiling ! I could barely sleep because it was so hot so wouldnt stay again.
The location is the best, the staff is suuper friendly!! Cleanliness could be q bit better. As negative, my matress was really bad! Completely flat, hard to sleep
they need air conditioning ASAP, I needed to have a good sleep that day and i sleep 1-2 hours, the room was so hot, but unbelievable hot, outside was 22 celcius at 1 am but in the room was 35 celcius, was crazy, I think the only good thing about the property is the location, and there is just one bathroom for an entire floor, looks more like a motel than hostel, I do not recommend stay here until they put air conditioning
The place has bed bugs and we were not able to receive a whole refund. We had to switch hostel and the staff because of the bed bugs and the staff told us we were rude and they still have not answered our email about getting all our money back although they confirmed the bed bugs were real. Would not recommend to anyone.
Croatian capitol is often called the city of museums, as there are more of them per square meter than any other place in the world, which does not mean there is nothing else for you to do. You can, according to a local custom, have a coffee (popiti kavu), which translated from Croatian means: "sit and watch the world go by", as Miroslav Krleža, a famous Croatian writer used to do, or immerse in other rich contents this city offers to its visitors.
The youth hostel Zagreb is nested in Petrinjska street, in walking distance from the bus terminal, train station and all the sights.
