Hostel El Albergue is a small hostel in downtown León that is in dire need of an update. It offers both private and dorm rooms in an open layout (walls do not reach the ceiling and lattices keep rooms connected to each other and the outdoors). Two cats and four tortoises as well of hoards of hungry mosquitoes roam the premises. Good Wi-Fi can be found throughout the property, but the advertised free breakfast does not exist.
The Location
The hostel is located three blocks from the cathedral and thus the centre of León. The neighbourhood is quiet with some shops around. There are no grocery shops close by.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Dorm rooms have wooden bunk beds and are not very spacious. There are tiny lockers inside the rooms (bring a padlock) and large lockers in the common area. You are only allowed small backpacks inside the dorm room and you must keep large bags/backpacks in the lockers in the common area, due to fears of introducing bedbugs. Dorms are not locked and walls do not reach the ceiling, thus connecting the dorm to the common areas. Noises carry impressively in this kind of setup and you can hear people using the toilet or cooking.
Sheets are clean but have tears and rips and mattresses are comfortable. The bunk beds have no curtains, electrical outlets, or lights. A bedsheet is attached to the bottom of the mattress of the upper bunk, creating a kind of canopy that further cramps the space in the lower bunk. There are some electrical outlets in the dorms, but barely any in the common areas. There are no screens or glass panes in the windows and mosquitoes take advantage of this fact (bring bug repellent). The dorm has one large ceiling fan, but no individual fans for the beds and the place can get stifling hot during the day.
There are shared showers/ toilets in the middle of the common area. The lighting in those is weak, as is the water pressure. There is only cold water, which is a blessing in the hot climate of León. The showers have a small shelf and rails to put up your clothes while showering.
Common Spaces
There is one large open common area with a “garden,” a kitchen, hammocks, and tables. The kitchen is basic and the fridge can be found at reception. The “garden” has some large trees and is very muddy when it rains. This is also where the four tortoises seem to roam freely. The cats can frequently be found on top of the dining tables. There is a large book exchange with lots of English books and plenty of travel guides. The hostel has a subdued vibe and a persistent musty smell hangs in the air. It is not a very social place and there is a distinct lack of comfortable seating in the common area.
Summary
This hostel is cheap but outdated and the combination of no fans and a gazillion mosquitoes makes for an uncomfortable stay. León offers a number of better hostels at the same price.

• How 2 get there...
• Taxi: From the bus terminal expect to pay 20 Cordobas per person. Tell the driver the location...Gasolinera Petronic , Media Cuadra Abajo.
• Bus: From the busstation, take any bus that goes to Sutiava (4Cordobas) and ask to be dropped off at Gasolinera Petronic (20 mtrs east of the hostel).
• Walking: Walk 3 blocks towards Pali supermarket and turn left. Walk 3 blocks until you reach San Juan church. Keep the church on your right and take the first street to your left continuing south for one block more to Gasolinera Petronic and make a right. Find the hostel on your right.
