Lake Placid, as the two-time host of the Winter Olympics is the perfect town to get a hostel for outdoor enthusiasts in all seasons. Check out the Olympic Village area and if you’re there in the winter, make sure to participate in some of the many winter activities that happen. The Adirondacks are beautiful in any time of year, but fall is especially popular with photographers and hikers -- the autumn colors are amazing if you catch them at the right time. Winter activities are just as popular.
There are many great hikes not only within the local area, but also in further areas. For hikers and backpackers, there are many high peaks in the nearby area that are worth climbing, but you should definitely do your research beforehand, to make sure that you have proper gear, maps and compasses, and water. There are hikes that vary from leisurely walks to very intense hikes, so there is always something for everyone.
The town itself is cute, but expensive -- there are lots of shops that sell everything from random antiques to outdoor clothing to books. There is an Outdoor Adventure shop where you can even rent kayaks or paddleboards to take out on Lake Placid. There are a few grocery stores, but if you’re only there for a few days, bring your own food. Dining is quite pricey. If you’re in town for the evening, take a stroll around the lake at sunset -- it’s quite beautiful.
Lake Placid hostels may not be in the central town area, so it’s usually best if you drive in. Having a car is highly recommended for getting around -- everything that is worth exploring in the Adirondacks can only be reached by car (although there are cycling areas as well).
