Hostels in Eindhoven, Netherlands

Eindhoven was founded in the thirteenth century because it was on the trade route from Holland to Liège. The city was plundered and burned several times during the Middle Ages. During World War II, the city was an important target during the Operation Market Garden. The Philips facilities in the city were also attacked and the bombing of the Western Allies destroyed large parts of the city.

Today, Eindhoven has just over two hundred thousand inhabitants, it is the fifth largest city in the Netherlands and it is regarded as a technology center. Eindhoven is the most important production and research center of Philips. The Philips Sports Club, known more as PSV Eindhoven, is one of the strongest football teams in the Netherlands and has been a European Club Champion. Even if you do not like football very much, you will like the atmosphere in the stadium. There are interesting places to visit. The Van Abbemuseum of Modern Art includes works by Jan Sluijters, Carel Willink, and Isaac Israels. Evoluon -- a conference center and former science museum -- is a monument reminiscent of an alien spacecraft. The Frits Philips Music Centre hosts many concerts and there are other places to visit, as well.

Eindhoven hostels might be a problem for the regular backpacker, as their number is quite limited but the prices of hostels in Eindhoven are quite high. The city does not have many options for budgeted travelers; this is a pity and many people just decide to skip it. Conditions and service at the Eindhoven hostels are good and they are worth the price. A slight problem is their location -- most hostels in Eindhoven are a bit far from the center and the bus and train stations, so you either need to walk quite a lot or to take public transportation, which is not very cheap.
