Looking for budget stays in Chemnitz? This section is designed to save you time, money, and unnecessary stress. We've got insider tips to help you find affordable hostels and the cheapest places to stay in Chemnitz.
Chemnitz is an independent city and the third-largest in the state of Saxony, located near the German border with Czech Republic. Called "Karl Marx City" not too long ago, the city has gone through many changes in the recent decades and it was even awarded with the "History City of the Reunification" prize a couple of years ago. Once a cradle of industrialisation, Chemnitz is nowadays known as the city of modernism and offers a pretty wide range of cultural and historical monuments, as well as being home to the Chemnitz University of Technology.
Marks of the industrialisation period are still present throughout the city. To get a better feel of it you can start by visiting the industrial museum Sächsisches Industriemuseum, one of the main attractions in the city, and continue by discovering numerous historical factories and industrial complexes in the city. Some of the other significant points of interest include the historical Kassberg neighbourhood, a Karl Marx monument from the seventies that is more than seven meters high, the Red Tower (which is in fact the oldest preserved landmark in the city), the Petrified Forest, art exhibitions in Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz, Villa Esche with its Art Nouveau style, and the Rabenstein Castle from the late twelfth cenutry that is located in the suburb of Rabenstein.
Besides the mentioned opportunities to experience history and culture of Chemnitz, there are also options for recreation and relaxation activities in the nearby Ore Mountains and various valleys in the surrounding area.
If you are not arriving with a vehicle, there is nothing to worry about as you can use buses and trams to get around the city. The prices are moderate and the connections are pretty good and frequent. You will have a choice of Chemnitz hostels; your chances of finding one in the city centre can be low, but options do exist and this just might be the best choice if you are staying to check out Chemnitz's main sights.
