Sozopol is a very beautiful sea resort in Bulgaria that is close to Bourgas, Nessebar, Sunny Beach, Primorsko, and Tsarevo. Although Sozopol is tiny, with a population of only six thousand, it is a leading resort with rich history, memorable infrastructure, and great atmosphere. Sozopol is often quoted as the best place for a romantic vacation on the Bulgarian seaside. The beach in Sozopol is awesome and not so crowded like other Bulgarian sea resorts.
The best time to visit Sozopol is during Apolonia Festival of Arts, when there are many performances every day for about a week. Apolonia is held annually at the end of August and beginning of September. Definitely visit the fortress, churches, and temples in Sozopol. There are quite many of them for a town of its size.
The choices for hostels in Sozopol are limited and may only be open in the summer, but you will have a beautiful location in the Old Town, very close to the beach. Sozopol hostel prices are moderate; you are surrounded by old wooden houses and a view of the nearby islands. Be sure to taste the local food.
The nearest airport and train station are in Bourgas -- ask your landlord to get a taxi for you when you arrive at the airport to your Sozopol hostel. The chance that you will get overcharged if you take a taxi from the airport on your own is significant. There are good restaurants and several clubs but if you look for parties, definitely visit Sunny Beach. However, local people are very friendly, there is much to see, and food is delicious and not very expensive.
