Knoxville is great! Remember, you can ride the downtown trolley in the daytime for free, and the KAT buses do run at night to some very good places. Also if for some reason the air quality is yellow or orange, KAT buses will be free.
There's a great retro clothing and furniture store, Legacy, you gotta see it!!!
Knoxville, or K-town, as it is known by local hipsters, is home to the University of Tennessee and is the entry destination to the nearby Great Smoky Mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Whether you are looking to stay for a university football game or are looking to hit the trails, Knoxville is a very worthwhile city to visit!
Its tightly-knit and beautiful historic downtown city center is a magnificent place to soak up the Appalachian spirit. One of Knoxville’s prime advantages is its pedestrian walkability. With the University of Tennessee campus dispersed closely within the center frame of the city, on any given day the streets are lively with thoughtful, youthful students. Perhaps one of the kindest and hospitable cities in the South, Knoxville will prove to the passing traveler to be a memorable city.
Knoxville boasts a very cozy atmosphere and is a hipster hotspot in the region. If you arrive on a Thursday, don’t forget that Thursday night is eighties night at Sassy Anne’s, a hipster house-turned-club and Knoxville favorite, in the Fourth and Gill district. And if you are a sweet-tooth fanatic, make sure to stop by Kay’s Ice Cream —- one of the city’s oldest standing establishments that produces its own milk and the best ice cream south of Ohio! And if trails and biodiversity are what you’re after, Great Smoky Mountain National Park is an hour’s drive away.
Options for Knoxville hostels are limited but within walking distance to the historic downtown district. Take a morning walk across the scenic Gay Street bridge, catch a performance by the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra at the beautifully-restored Tennessee Theater, or tailgate with Volunteers on game day -— Knoxville is an off-the-beaten-path gem!
