The Hostelz.com Review
A fairly nice hostel about 10 mintues walking distance from the train station. It has a full kitchen (closed during the day) and good bathrooms. There is a small sitting area near the reception desk and a huge stone courtyard with tables and chairs and there is a basketball/soccer court. It's usually pretty quiet. There are occassionally people around to hang out with but it isn't a very social hostel. There is an early lockout starting at 9:30 AM. Guys and girls rooms are separate, except for when there are mixed groups of friends staying together (and that's only allowed during summer). They only accept reservations by phone.

nNice We had short but nice stay at the hostel. The place is easy to find even though we arrived to Venice late at night. Accommodation was comfortable and clean. — Olena , Ukraine (2012-05-13)
Depressing, dismal and not clean This hostel is the worst I've stayed in. No breakfast, no wifi, no towels, no kitchen, no way to meet people. Stay here if you only want a place to sleep and be sure to bring a towel! I was there in January and the room was very cold. Also, there was one shower to be shared among 3 dorm rooms and the bathroom floor was always wet. Not a warm or inviting place, wish I would've splashed out on a bed and breakfast. — Anonymous , USA (2012-02-05)
Thefts in hostel I must warn everybody about this hostel. I spent three nights in Santa Fosca hostel in Venice in august 2009, and had a very bad experience. The room was robbed and stolen very valuable technics, laptops and camera, money and wallet with personal documents. The staff of hostel were very unkind and not willing to help, claiming that it's the first case of robbery in hostel. After, in police they told us about the problem they have with the hostel, and how it happens very often somebody gets robbed there. I must also say that at the time the room was robbed, there was one girl sleeping in the room, who also locked the room before going to sleep. Somebody came in with a key, take care people! — nina (2009-09-18)
Thief and cockroach i stayed in that hostel from the 18 to 19th of august. i'm very disappointed and irritated because of a robbery in our room in the middle of the night the last day (at 4 in the morning). we were sleeping in our room and someone get into our room and stole my bag so it means all my papers, my camera, my mobile phone. The hostel had the photofit picture of the thief and they didn't warn us. Moreover when we ring the bell to ask some help (we needed the police number and use a computer to get the number of our bank) they didn't even answer (i hope they had a good night). Stay away! — Claudine Brunier-Collet , France (2009-08-25)

I LOVED this place! I was there at the end of June. First thing is that the place is WONDERFUL. You have the walls of an old monastery around you. I think that it is important to start your day and to end it with something so beautiful. it is not a block, it is a real historical place of Venice. Than you have there some trees that live just in Southern Europe. I even found a wild orchid on a wall, 3 meters from my room's door. Also the place is quiet, which I loved. All people from the reception were nice and helpful, definitely kinder than in other hotels in Venice I've been. And the girls they came in were nice and from all over the world and we had great talks in the evening. We kept always locked and it was pretty safe. This was not my first time in Venice so I can compare the place with others I was before and I can say that Santa Fosca is definitely the place where I want to stay when passing by Venice again! Thank you people, you were part of the success of my last trip there! — Mona , Romania (2009-06-29)
Stay away if you can Hostel Santa Fosca is not a safe place. The hostel is run by the students of the nearby university. The keys to the rooms are often left unattended during the day in the reception and literally anyone can come in and just take them!
The access to the hostel rooms doesn't lead through the reception (but through an open courtyard accessible from the street ), so there's no control over who comes in/out. One night during the stay a thief came into our room in the middle of the night! Before we woke up and scared him away, he managed to steal my friends telephone and all of her money. We went to the police to make a report. The police told us that hostel santa fosca is on "the black list of hostels," that such events happen there often because the hostel has no security. Needless to say, the entire experience was dreadful. Waking up at 3 a.m. and seeing a stranger in your room going through your things is terrifying. Since the thieves can have the keys to the rooms, there's really little possibility of preventing the kind of situations that happened to me and my friends. So if you value your safety -- stay away from that hostel! — kooozi , Poland (2008-11-15)

Stay at this hostel. It's an easy trek from the train station, and pretty centrally located. I was here in April 2006. No curfew, but an early lockout, which can make for a rough morning (but relax! have an espresso). This place was great, with several quiet courtyards and other nice outdoor spots to sit. The rooms are nothing special, but I didn't have any complaints (though no one was social at all when I was there). Note that Venice is the best really late at night, when no one else is around, but be careful. Venice is weird. — Dana (2006-10-05)

Coming from a uni dorm, it was just like being home. Clean rooms, each bed had its own massive cupboard, bedside table and lamp. Bathrooms were ok, kitchen looked huge, never used it though. Courtyard was nice at night if you wanted to brave the mossies. Found it alright by following the directions. It's an ok location -- Venice is so small that nothing is that far away. But the curfew really sucks. — Anonymous (2006-08-20)

I stayed here November 2004. It's clean and has a reasonable price. It's a little difficult to find but the location is not too far from a vaporetto [water bus] stop. — Camille (2005-08-20)

I stayed there during winter time so it was very quiet (which I liked coz I really just needed a place to sleep and take showers). The staff were very helpful, the room looked like a hospital (mainly because of the stainless steel beds), the bathroom was very clean and its soo close to the train station (I think I counted three bridges away). Early lockout isn't really a problem because you can't really stay up too late in Venice since there's not much going on at night...instead, I suggest to wake up early and walk through the streets without getting pushed around or stuck in human traffic... Enjoy. — Anonymous (2005-07-28)

This place is GREAT. As far as I know (and I talked to some people while in Venice) it's the cheapest place around — which is amazing for the location and the cleanliness. Rooms are huge with not a lot of beds in them, everything is so clean, and the courtyard is so relaxing. Go here if you go to Venice!!! — Anonymous (2005-06-20)

For a city that doesn't offer many squares and places to chill, the courtyard at Santa Fosca is brilliant. This hostel has a superb location right in the middle of the Turner-esque Venetian scene. The showers and toilets were a bit busy when I was here, and perhaps needed more cleaning attention, but it was not serious enough to put me off going back. — Cosmopolitan (2004-10-10)

A nice place. It's clean, but it's not the place to go if you want to party. It's very quiet. — Rosalie (2004-10-03)

Excellent hostel - great location, clean bathrooms, excellent courtyard and extremely good value for Venice. Lockout shouldn't be an issue, to be honest - you've got Venice on your front step. As for curfew, Venice by night seemed pretty tame, apart from the nearby Iguana Bar on Cannaregio 2515, fondamenta de la Misericordia. It's worth "sprinting" back from. Obviously there are mossies (mosquitoes) about, but, again, this is Venice, so what do you expect? Overall, great hostel - book ahead and use your Rolling Venice, ISIC cards for the discount. — Hieronymus Bosch (2004-09-27)

Ok, it wasn't the cleanest place, but there were no bugs. It was also cheap and near the train station. Our room overlooked one of the canals; how much more can you ask? Our room was located outside, so the lockout didn't apply to us. The staff were super nice, too, and you can save money by using the kitchen. Besides, when you are in Venice you have better things to do than sit in your room all day. — J. and A. (2004-09-25)
