The Hostelz.com Review
This "new" hostel in Milan is located about a 15 minute walk from the Centrale F.S. train station to the West. By the Piazza Lagosta take Via Garigliano and take Via Della Pergola on your right. The hostel has a small sign on the left side of the street. It is located about a five minute walk from the closest subway train station (Yellow line Zara), but is really not near any monuments. It is about a 20 minute walk or more to get to the Duomo and Scala Opera Theatre. There is a market on the weekends right outside the hostel in the streets which is neat, but it's mostly knock-off scarves and fresh fruit.
The main door to the hostel is hard to find as you have to go through a large double door guard gate and then go into a little dark outdoor patio area. The rooms are have bunks for about 4-10 people per room. You get sheets, but they are thin, so they aren't the best quality, but they do seem to be clean. The bathroom has a shower, toilet, and sink and is not bad really -- when there is toilet paper available.
The staff are nice, but often not around, so they could not provide information or help when it was needed. One plus about this hostel is the price. It's only 10 euros per night. But it should be noted that you pay for what you get. The hostel is bare bones, but with brightly painted rooms, and it's a decent hostel for a night or two.

It sucks this place it's a rat's nest! I can't believe they got declaration of habitability. the rooms are dirty, wet, full of holes, and the blankets are smelly. you simply can't live there, not even for one night! the bathroom is quite unusable and dirty too and there's no garden, well, it looks like a dump! the place is not safe, especially if you're a woman traveling alone. — Julia (2008-09-02)
Avoid it It's better to stay away from this place. I mean, someone may like to sleep in a squat house (cause that's exactly what this place is), but simply, you can't sleep there. There will be people until morning shouting in the yard below, just outside your window. So, finally -- good if you want to stay in a squat house full of punks. Very bad, if you want to sleep one hour. — Fernaz , italian (2007-05-27)
Avoid this place like hell. Dirty, noisy, it's a damn crack house, not a hostel. — Bruno Jaspaert , Belgique (2007-04-17)

Il Postello was an excellent and inspiring place to stay. we had a good chat with one of the staff about the history of the place. it used to be a community centre run for the community by the community and the current staff have tried to keep this going. Staff work in three-quarter-month periods throughout the year to give people who have trouble finding a job a chance to work there. When I was there I was told that soon they would have to renew the rent and as they are not for profit and the rent is going up they need support now more than ever. The hostel was clean, fun, well placed, and safe -- as much due to the sense of community as anything else. If you care about keeping social movements going and supporting co-operative schemes then stay here. — Hazel , Britain (2007-04-03)
This place is a dump, there were people from other rooms walking into our room. i saw him leaving as i was arriving which left me in great fear of being robbed as he was with a large group. My friend was given an old curtain for a bed cover whilst i was given an old rug that stank of cheese, obviously hadnt been washed in a long time, if ever. The photos on their site are misleading as there is no common room like in the picture, it simply doesn't exist and the kitchen is very small, only enough room for one group to use it at a time which was mostly hogged by the same people all day and night. With all the parties going on, anyone can easily enter the hostel making very unsafe. There are holes in the wall, i do not recommend this place at all, the only good thing i have to say is it's cheap but not worth it. — Percy (2007-03-11)
When I first arrived, the Postello was locked. I knocked like a maniac but nothing. When two guys finally appeared they said they didn't have my reservation, looking me strangely. I thought it was a fool's day joke. I confirmed my reservation twice over the phone and also sent an e-mail (Cause I read somebody's similar experience, so I kinda saw this coming). The guy who spoke to me didn't put me on the list. Eventually, they did receive my mail. Anyway, there were available beds, so the put me in. While I was trying to sleep, entire Postello was partying (they do every night). Someone was getting in and out of the room whole night long not letting others sleep, leaving the doors open and not switching off the lights. A woman woke me up at 3 a.m. asking me if I was sure I was in the right bed. There were two dogs everywhere in the hostel. It is usual to find the doors locked when you come back home. They are not always nearby to let you in, so you have to wait (sometimes short period, sometimes very long). Second night was quieter and better. I met a lot of interesting people. I do not recommend this place to solo persons and especially not to single women. It's not always as described, could be better, but I obviously got there in the wrong time. I tend to try out other places next time. This place is only 10 EUR, but trust me, not worth a cent more. What you pay is what you get. Have fun!
Also there was no hot water. — Diddy (2007-02-06)

Party party party! — pOstello Party (2007-02-05)

Awesome hostel! for 10 euros it is a gift! There is free internet access, very friendly staff, near the estacione centrale (i hope i haven't misspelled it) and, at least when i was there, there is also a club going on on the basement and it is a pretty nice place actually. probably around two hundred people or more. the entrance ticket is included in the room price! Really nice place, and I recommend it to everyone staying in milano! — Iceman (2006-12-12)

I miss these people so much. Someday I hope to go back to this place. — Paul the American (2006-10-31)

This is a good hostel to sleep and nothing more. Not too expensive. a bit far from the Central Station (you may go by underground). Not very dirty. a safe hostel. — Filipe, Ruben and Tiago (Portugal) (2006-09-01)
If you are a male traveling alone, it might be a safer location. But if you are a lone female traveling you ought to reconsider. They did reply fast to my email request, which was a bonus. I arrived at 22:30 having wandered around Milan's nightlife areas for over an hour with a roll-around, and please note that directions are not so clear. When I finally came to the street, I was actually avoiding the entrance, thinking it looked like the "rat pack's" entrance -- roadbikes smattered at the entrance and bikers lingering (myself want a roadbike, but I was not expecting a rally atmosphere at the hostel). I walked the length of the block trying to find the hostel, along my stroll I saw a few polizia cars and a pair of police monitoring a man. Finally, I asked a woman at the restaurant across the street from number fifteen and she smiled and pointed to the entrance across the way. Upon entering through the gates into the courtyard, my mind recalls only shadows of beings and an urgency when I asked for "Il Postello." The man who led me to the entrance was accommodating. But I did not feel safe when entering -- an odd man lingering by the door eyed me suspiciously as I paid. Please keep in mind that I am a seasoned traveler, I have lived in Europe, traveled, and ventured alone; I am an assertive individual. All I offer is a word of caution. The room was clean, and if flies are your thing. I travel with earplugs that were a blessing to the ongoing noise outside. The next morning I met an Aussie, who as a male, also felt very uncomfortable -- this hostel was recommended by "Let's Go," I believe he said. We both woke up early to leave the residence, and even then the washrooms and toilets were horrific. It was a good thing I decided not to leave anything in the office for safe keeping as the office was closed that morning with no information as whom to contact. Additionally, they said that someone would be watching over the things in the office all night -- well to show me my room, the receptionist left all of the things with the edgy man looking on. Consider. I got mixed messages from this residence, please also note that a sign on the door said that police were not welcome there. For ten euros, you get what you pay for, a bed for the night -- reconsider the shower, a few more euros might be worth another hostel or even a night at the airport. After reading this, act not brave, rather be cautious. — T. (2006-05-25)

Nice rooms, not so good bathroom (sometimes with cold water), and really poor organization, because we surely had a reservation and when we came to hostel no one knew about us, but finally they found little more expensive but fine solution. But reason why I give four stars is that we have been there for three nights and every night there have been a perfect nightlife -- great performance and a hip-hop party. So if you want to go there you will find very nice people and I hope as much fun as we found. Just reserve it and check it four to six times to make sure they are waiting for you, because reservations is taking more people and not all of them are precious. — Adam Milata (2006-05-01)

We stayed at Il Postello for a weekend and wished we could have stayed forever! We met some great people and especially the grotto bar/dancehall is good fun. Cheap, good music and you can meet some of the most interesting guys and girls Milan has to offer. We'll be back! — Lotta and Eva (2006-04-26)

I enjoyed my time there, even though the long time residents Romanians take the toilet paper and occupy the kitchen at night. Very friendly and helpful staff, I felt safe except for the moment when one of my roommates freaked me out in the middle of the night, when he tried to touch me sleeping. Cool interior, crazy backyard, and relaxed atmosphere. — Silke (2006-03-21)

My friend, who is a girl, and I stayed at this hostel and the staff was very helpful and kind to us. We made very charming friends who were also very respectful and helpful. I felt very safe here. Nothing was stolen from us, the 24-hour desk downstairs was very reliable. That was were we kept our luggage. Our sheets were clean and nothing smelled. It's not luxurious, it's a hostel. — Elle (2006-02-11)
