A welcome respite in a town already full of quality budget accommodations, The Hectate House is the only women's only backpackers in Nelson and one that draws rave reviews from all who visit there. Small and cozy quarters are lovingly done up in this historical house, located on serene Nile Street. A huge veranda with comfy chairs faces the quiet, leafy road, the perfect place to catch up with a novel nabbed from the hostel's book exchange.
The bathrooms are spacious and very clean as is the spotless and well-equipped kitchen. Behind the hostel, tables and chairs are strewn beneath the pear trees, waiting for travelers to dine al fresco. Full of character, this house has an old stable out back that has been converted into a bathroom/shower area. There is also a two person cottage behind the building if you are really wanting a taste of seclusion.
The location is also a wonderful draw. It is a bit removed from town but the area is so lovely you wont mind the fifteen minute walk. It's also handy if you wish to go for a walk along the scenic Matai river. There are a few swimming holes that the locals frequent, so feel free to take a dip if it gets hot. However, you should note that the path along the river turns into free pasture after awhile, something to keep in mind in case you have a fear of roaming bulls. Another scenic place within reach is the Botanic Gardens. Climb up to the Most Central Point in New Zealand Spire and reward yourself afterwards with a dip in The Hecate House's outdoor spa.
