Absolutely amazing! What better HI Hostel could there ever be. The views are amazing, and the wood-panelled hostel warm and cosy. Showers and WCs were impeccably clean, and the large dorms (by HI standards) were a delight. The hostel has equipment rooms for skis and boards, is very close to one ski-lift in particular. Not a long walk (but very steep, specially when snowy!) from the centre of Grindelwald, but views, views, views -- none better in the whole of HI Hostels. Excellent, and with friendly and helpful staff.
Amazing! First of all, if you are walking up to the hostel from the train station, it will take half an hour to forty-five minutes, and the incline is steep! Little did we know, but otherwise, the view is fantastic! and there's a lovely living room area that's really comfortable and the bathrooms are clean. We were in a little room with six beds that was dwarf-style, a very small room, but had lots of character!
This hostel has been ruined. Used to be a pretty nice place fifteen or so years ago. Now it looks like a Holiday Inn from the inside. Clean and efficient, but no chalet feel to the place any longer. No kitchen. Living room is sterile now. Piano is locked. All the things that once made this place a friendly hostel with a family atmosphere are gone.
My friends and I stayed here several nights in 1999 as we toured the area. It was a lovely place and very homey.
I stayed here back in the 1990s and after travelling the globe this was the most amazing hostel I had stayed in. The views and the chalet were like something out of "Heidi," for those old enough to recall this story. It is great to know that this wonderful hostel is still going strong and still receiving such accolades. Yes the walk to the chalet bought out the mountain goat in me back then, but it was well worth the hike.
I visited this wonderful hostel in 1970 while bicycling through Europe. This was like heaven, on the side of a large hill overlooking all of Grindelwald and the beautiful Eiger. Other peaks were in full view from my window at dawn. Magnificent.
Very clean, nice and well-run place. For three days, my friend and I had a lovely private room at no extra cost, with a beautiful view out of our window, and we felt very safe and comfortable.
The only downside is that it is a vertical walk up from town. Don't be fooled by the map on the website - that little line is going directly up a mountain! And after a day of hiking, getting home after dinner was a challenge!
Regardless, the quality of the accommodation was worth the short uphill walk.
This place is great! I will definitely go back. It's clean, safe, and cozy :) It has a great breakfast, too!
There were down comforters, nice workers, and amazing views--and it was very clean. It was one of my best hostel experiences. It was a little bit hard to find though, make sure you get there before it's dark.
Very clean, comfortable, and safe. Very friendly staff. Great view of the Eiger! Nice meals. Very international guests. Superb!
I stayed two nights. The building is a beautiful wooden chalet with wooden walls and floors. It was clean and well-maintained, and we had a balcony with a view right out on Eiger.
