Nice hotel
Great stay!
Good Hostel
This hostel is about a 15 minute downhill walk from the centre of Grindelwald. When you check in you are given a card that allows free bus travel around Grindwlwald, so you don't always have to walk back up the hill or pay for the train, although the buses can be quite infrequent. Beds are comfortable. There is no kitchen, just a microwave, and you have to pay if you need plates or cutlery. Breakfast is good, there weren't a lot of places I stayed in Switzerland that offered free breakfast, so I didn't mind that it was quite simple; bread, meat, jam, honey, cereal, apples, tea, coffee, juice and ovaltine. There are couches on the ground floor, so you can meet other travelers there.
Good hostel -- average breakfast
The location of this hostel is perfect, just next to the train station and cable car. The rooms are nice, the beds big enough, just the breakfast could see some improvement.
I stayed at this hostel in April 2005
This is a hostel similar to an HI Hostel in that it is clean, impersonal and has a good breakfast.
Some annoying points:
It's pretty isolated. It's more of a 20-30 minute walk to town, and if you get off the train with a big pack you've got to walk downhill (a taxi will take you about 3 minutes and run you about 12 Swiss Franks!). The biggest problem is leaving, because you can either wait for a train to take the 45 min. ride back from Mnnlichen OR you can walk uphill to the Grindelwald station.
It's impersonal. The staff are fairly rigid and non-friendly. They won't check you in until 3:30pm, so if you're early, you've got nothing to do. They were also completely useless in helping you figure out hikes, etc.
There isn't much to do. I was travelling alone, and there really aren't any places for young people to hang out and meet one another.
The bathrooms are far away. There are only bathrooms (albeit spatious and clean) on the first floor.
Your room is always unlocked.
Good points:
It's clean, spatious, the rooms have a sink, the breakfast had nice fresh bread.
Overall, if you're with people, and interested in spending a quiet time in a quiet town then, maybe this is the place for you. If you'd like to meet people, and have easy access to all of the Jungrau region and it's sites then stay in Interlaken (I loved Backpacker's Villa).
Thank you for my stay it was very good. The room was very nice & the beds were very comfortable. The room was well laid out but it was a shame about the leak in the sink. The view was spectacular.
Ah, if only all hostels could have accommodations as nice as this one. The Grindelwald Mountain Hostel isn't a fun party hostel, and it does cost a little more than most hostels, but you do get your money's worth.
It's located in Grindelwald, which is a about a 25 minute train ride up the mountain from Interlaken. More specifically, the hostel is located in Grindelwald Grund, which is a 15 minute walk down the hill from the main part of Grindelwald (which mostly consists of a main street with shops, restaurants, and a couple small grocery stores). You can get off at the Gridelwald train station and walk down to Grund, or you can transfer to the Grund train for a quicker journey down the hill. The hostel is about 100 meters from the Grund train station. As with just about any town in the area, the view is spectacular. The hostel is also just a short walk from a sky lift that takes you to the top of the nearby ridge for an amazing 360 view of the surrounding area.
The hostel is very nice, perfectly maintained, and spotlessly clean. But we should mention that it isn't charming or quaint, if that's what you're envisioning a "mountain hostel" to be. This hostel is thoroughly modern. The main common area has a ping-pong table, pool table (pay), and a nice sitting area. There is a kitchen, but it usually closes around 8 PM, so you may not get a chance to use it. And breakfast is included if you're up before 9 AM.
The rooms are clean and comfortable, except for perhaps the unfortunately tiny pillows they provide. Sinks are in the rooms, with shared toilet and shower facilities downstairs. The showers are great, with hot water and plenty of water pressure.
The hostel has about 60 beds, so it can accommodate a fair number of people. But it can be almost entirely empty except during the very peak of the seasons (both mid-summer and mid-winter). So depending on when you go, it may not be the best place to meet other travellers -- the social hostels in Interlaken are probably a better choice for that. If you do go, note that the reception has limited hours during which you can check-in (currently before noon and after 4 PM).
