Wittenberg (Lutherstadt Wittenberg), Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, is a town in the east of Germany, in the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt. The official name is Lutherstadt Wittenberg, referring to the close connection to Martin Luther, a very important figure in the Protestant Reformation. The German professor strongly doubted the indulgences of the Catholic Church and the possibility to buy freedom from God's penalty.

According to legend, Luther nailed his famous Ninety-five Theses on the portal of the All Saints' Castle Church (in German, "Schlosskirche") in the early sixteenth century. During the Seven Years' War, the church was destroyed by a fire after a heavy bombardment. Guided tours are available and you can go up to the tower, as well. Lutherhaus is the place where Martin Luther spent most of his adult life; formerly, it was part of the University of Wittenberg, but nowadays, it is a museum displaying original items from Martin Luther's life, including manuscripts and pamphlets. It is the largest museum of the Protestant Reformation in the world.

Numerous memorial sites for Luther and Philip Melanchthon (another important reformer and collaborator of Luther's) are located in town and belong to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Melanchthon House is the place where the humanist and important reformer lived. It is a Renaissance-style house from the sixteenth century and on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The permanent exhibition tells about his life and work.

Wittenberg is located between Leipzig and Berlin. There is a hourly high-speed ICE train linking Leipzig and Berlin, which also stops in Wittenberg. If you have to take a plane, the closest airports are in Berlin and Leipzig. In addition to that, getting there by car is fast and easy since the motorway A9 passes by Wittenberg.
