The building of Yolo Hostel used to house a boutique hotel, but it was recently sold and turned into a budget hostel for young people. What is awesome is that you still get the luxury with a beautiful swimming pool, but it won’t hurt your wallet. However, when it comes to the dorms, this place definitely won’t be your favourite place to sleep on your trip!
The Location
Yolo Hostel’s location is not ideal -- it is a long walk from the center in the southern part of the city, surrounded by a residential area where there is really not that much to see. It is a quiet location but it does not matter that much, as Yolo is a party hostel, so you will have loud music playing most of the day. However, if you stay here you can enjoy the slightly cheaper prices of food away from the center -- be sure to eat it where you bought it though -- consuming outside food on the premises might lead to a hefty fine at the hostel!
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel offers private as well as dorm rooms and you even have different types of dorms as well, even if the only difference is that you get a little bit more space for a little bit more money at the more expensive one. In a way, the dorm is really quite basic as there are no lockers or bedside lamps and only a few plugs far away from the beds. The rooms are cooled by air conditioning, but it gets the room to a freezing temperature and only thin sheets are provided, and nothing more is available upon request either. Also, early checkout is not possible, even if the place is not full. The dorms are en suite and the bathrooms are really nice and comfortable with plenty of hot water and a huge area to store your clothes so that they do not get wet. However, as there is only one per twelve guests, this is almost always full and you are often constrained to use an outside one, which is definitely less nice but still ok.
Common Spaces
The whole hostel is arranged around a little courtyard, which has a massive and well-maintained swimming pool in the middle that is an absolute pleasure to be inside. There are comfy sunbathing beds around it with mini tables for your cocktails next to it. There is also a chilling area in between the bar and reception with a pool table and plenty of dining tables. The hostel has a wide selection of food and drink options, and every evening free shots are distributed and drinking games are played.
Summary
Yolo Hostel is principally a party hostel, but thanks to the good soundproofing, it is possible to enjoy the place even if you want to head to bed early. While the buildings and common areas are beautiful and attractive, the dorms are crammed and not practical at all.
