CM City Hostel is quiet hostel with very little sociable atmosphere. The dorms, however, are extremely comfortable, so if you're if looking for a cosy hideaway then this place is perfect. It's very basic with few features and the cost reflects this; however, it certainly isn't a dive like many other Chiang Mai hostels in this price range. Bikes can be used for free and a simple breakfast is included.
The Location
This is a forty-minute walk from the train station. Exit the train station carpark and turn right. Head toward the T junction ahead and take a left. Follow this road for ten minutes and cross a large river. Once over the river, take the fourth left. After doing this, you should see McDonalds after a hundred meters. Carry on down this road, and go over the crossroad, which has a Burger King just before it. After the crossroad, the road will divide into two -- take the right road and then take the second left. The hostel will be on your left just after this turn.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Dorms are very spacious, with very large comfy beds. They also come with curtains for extra privacy, reading lights, and plug sockets. Unfortunately, not all rooms have air conditioning, and you will have to pay a little bit more for this. Two fans are supplied in the rooms that don't have this, but this may not be enough in the warmer months. There's also a lack of bathrooms; the main dorm only has one, which includes the toilet and shower. Hot water is present but the shower has very little pressure. Wi-Fi is present throughout the building, which is fast due to the lack of guests, and everywhere is very clean.
Common Spaces
There's a very small area downstairs where you can eat the included breakfast, which is simply fruit, toast, tea, and coffee. Seeing anyone hanging out here during the day is extremely rare, as this hostel has more of a hotel feel to it. There's a sofa on the first floor with a book exchange, and that's about it unfortunately. Consequently, this is not a sociable hostel, and if it weren't for the comfy dorms there would be no reason to stay here. You may be after some peace and quiet though.
Summary
There's no vibe here at all, but it is peaceful. Opposite the hostel, there is a large food court where there are some great local food options that are really cheap, and it's only a five-minute walk from the nightly bazaar. There is a lack of hostel facilities on offer so don't expect much, and it's unlikely that there will be many guests going on the tours that are advertised due to the size of the hostel.
