Although technically in a different state than Delhi, Gurgaon is considered as if almost part of the capital of India. Travelers going to Delhi often stay in Gurgaon and vice versa. Although not particularly close to the centre of Delhi (Old Delhi), Gurgaon offers excellent connectivity to the entire capital region, thanks to the metro network.
Same as like in the rest of India, budget accommodation options include not only Gurgaon hostels in the traditional sense, but also homestays and hybrids -- some people have turned spare rooms inside their home into mini-hostels, welcoming national and international travelers. This kind of accommodation is ideal for those who want to mingle with the locals and have something more than accommodation covered, as meals (at least one meal a day) are often included in the rate or added at little extra cost.
It gets really hot in the area during spring and summer -- look for a room with AC during warmer months, and note that rooms (same as taxis around the city) normally have two prices (with or without AC). Rooms without AC would commonly make a fan available, though.
Gurgaon offers a more dynamic and extensive shopping and nightlife experience than Delhi itself: you are more likely to find something open in the evenings and night in central Gurgaon, where there are shopping malls in every major road. Bars and restaurants will also be found mostly inside malls.
While in Gurgaon, do not forget to dig in and enjoy some of the local cuisine. As Gurgaon is quite a developed city welcoming a lot of tourists and business travelers, there are a lot of restaurants of different international cuisines, apart from those serving Indian specialties from a variety of regions across the country. Chinese would be the most popular after local cuisine.
If you plan to explore the Golden Triangle of North-India (Delhi-Agra-Jaipur), Gurgaon is a perfect base, as it is located on the road toward Jaipur, the Pink City.
