Our handwritten guide on Backpacking Nepal

Nepal is one of the most incredibly countries in the world and is home to some incredibly resilient and amazing people. In recent times, they have been devastated by earthquakes that have destroyed their livelihoods and more than ever the people here need your support and especially for you to visit to keep their tourism industry going. Majority of the Nepalese people, especially in Kathmandu and in many of the hillside villages through which people trek rely on tourism to provide for their families.

The major city here is Kathmandu and you will find an abundance of hostels here to stay in while you plan what you would like to see and do around the country. The city itself has some incredible things going on and the locals are always happy to have you come in their shops, sit down, and have a tea and a chat. Make sure you go visit the Patan Durbar Square from here and the Pashupatinath which gives an interesting look into the Hindi practices of the locals, but make sure you are respectful and don't take photographs. You can literally spend weeks navigating the streets here and getting to know all of the nooks and crannies.

If you are planning on trekking, you can get everything you need here for a really cheap cost comparatively to what you would find it at home, so it is a good idea to come with an empty suitcase and buy everything there. The majority of trips to Everest Basecamp start from here, but there are a stack of other hikes that you can do that you can organize from here too. Many of the hostel owners will know people that can do the hikes at a cheap rate.

The other area where they organize treks from is Pokhara, the third largest city in Nepal. There are a stack of hostels to stay in here as well and they can give you information on who to go trekking with if you haven't planned it yet. Most trekkers start from here to do the Annapurna Circuit and to do Annapurna Basecamp. It is a beautiful area and if you can you should get up to the lookout to check out the spectacular views of the Himalayan Mountain Range.

Chitwan National Park in the south is also a popular destination for tourists. It is one of the only places in the world left where you can see rhinoceros in the wild, and also some tigers if you are lucky. It is a nice trip to relax on if you have just come back from hiking.

There are a few other places that have hostels around Nepal that you can stay in, but these are scattered so do your research if you are heading off the beaten path. There are some hostels in Bhaktapur which is a stunning city with traditional architecture and buildings. While some were devastated in the earthquake, there are some that survived and they are worth a look in. It should take you approximately a day to explore.

Nepal is a spectacular country. Make sure that you plan to spend a great deal of time here, but don't plan too much, because you never know who you will meet and where the friendliness and kindness of the locals will take you!
