Skye Backpackers Reviews

I found it to be average. We were 7 of them and surprisingly we were given a caravan for our accommodation, which was behind the office room and the way to get was very wet and no suitable path. The wifi sucks, There was hardly any access to that and the reason given was due to the rains (which was just an excuse). The only thing I liked was you have a kitchen and you can cook whatever you want.

Really neat place -- though hard to get to

Pros -- Lots of character and interesting things on the walls. Board games and a large backyard, the dome looks neat (though we never got a chance to go inside, as we went during the heatwave and it turned into a solar cooker). They played music during one of the nights we were there, it was a nice and sing-a-longy. The showers are separated and lockable, and in good condition. The bathrooms were big and clean too. Beds were ok. Staff were lovely and kind. Cons -- Only 3 electrical sockets for 6 people in the room. Location is pretty out of the way. We were not used to the tiny, single-lane roads with passing spots and with no lights -- plus driving on the wrong side -- to get to the hostel. People fly down these roads and it's a bit unnerving. The hostel is in the middle of nowhere, which isn't great if you haven't eaten when you arrive and have no food. There is only one restaurant within 20 minutes of the hostel. It's a great restaurant (the Olde Inn, lots of taps, several vegetarian options plus live music) but because it's the only restaurant for miles, it was super-packed and took about an hour to get food, which wasn't great for us weary travelers. We didn't use the hostel kitchen -- we probably would have if we stayed longer than 2 nights. Just some things to keep in mind.

Nice and cosy village hostel

We were a group of 8 people and got a room of our own for 2 nights. All the beds had lovely signs with different plant names, such as heather, dandelion, and daffodil. There was plenty of space in the room and we also loved the communal kitchen where we could cook. The lounge with the fireplace was also a nice touch. There were maps and sightseeing ideas in the kitchen and lobby and these helped us a lot. Did love the cat who lived in the hostel and walked around all the time. One of the toilets was awkward though because the light went out all the time. Also didn't like the fact that you had to give a deposit for the key (apparently I lost the key somewhere in the room and had to part with 10 pounds as a result). Great that they offer discounts in nearby pubs if you're staying at the hostel, although we didn't use them. The location is perfect if you want to discover Isle of Skye and the view on the mountains just brilliant. Excellent for morning runs.

Overall very good, the staff extremely helpful and courteous. Given an attic room with beautiful view. The beds a bit creaky and would have liked a chair in the room. Would recommend.

Good stay overall

We stayed in the caravan as well and didn't have a problem structurally. There was an outside toilet and sink for the basic necessities, but the showers and other toilets were inside. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Saucy Mary's has good food and fun but that is the only place. The walks from the hostel were lovely. Take the MacBackpackers Tour that they offer. One of the best we took in Scotland. So, the hostel while small is comfortable enough. We would recommend it.

Great price, across from a friendly pub. however, the hostel facilities are awful. For 3 quid less than the price of a normal dorm room, you can stay in the caravan outside. Don't do it! It leaks water and is drafty and very loud. We stayed inside in a double room for 2.50 quid more than the price of a dorm room, per person. It was tiny -- the bed touched the wall on three sides, and there was barely room for our shoes between the fourth side of the bed and the wall with the entrance door! The common bathroom was tiny and the shower was peeling and moldy and had unpredictable controls. The kitchen and lounge are also way too small to accommodate groups of more than eight people. On the plus side, the staff is friendly and the hostel was very warm, with a coal fire in the lounge -- much appreciated in the January cold and wet!

Lovely! A nice change from huge party hostels. Skye is one of the nicest places on Earth, and Kylakin is a cool base to explore it from! The town is beautiful, but venture to the edges of Skye to see some of the most jaw-dropping scenery ever. The hostel was cozy -- I loved falling asleep with a bottle of wine, a book, and my friend playing guitar around the fire. Met some great Scots there and drank with them. Staff was lovely! Took out a bike one day and that was fun. Cheap breakfast, comfy beds, clean bathrooms. Not the nicest hostel, but small, cozy, and reliable. Great time!

I agree a bit with seemed like you had to be 'in the know' or you weren't allowed to have a good time...although the beds were made up like real beds fresh every day it didn't stop the souring of the experience by the sullen faces of long term guests...who never seemed to leave Kyleakin to see the rest of the island even tho some of them stayed there for months! Stay a night but move on - there's so much more to Skye.
