Kabale, Uganda, is the capital of the country's Western Region and is the gateway to Lake Bunyonyi, which is high on travelers' lists of places to stay in Uganda. It's mainly an administrative town of some fifty thousand people, with not so much of interest for international tourists, but it has all the amenities and conveniences that Lake Bunyonyi doesn't, so travelers will find themselves traveling through or staying overnight here. It's a major transport hub, too. Buses to and from all directions pass through or terminate in Kabale, and it's a handy place to pick up transport to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and the mountain gorillas. Kampala is a long, four-hundred-twenty-kilometer journey away.

Beautiful Lake Bunyonyi is the reason that foreign and domestic tourists come to Kabale. The lake is only around ten kilometres away and usually done by motorbike taxi. Again, the Kabale hostels can help you with a reliable and safe driver, or you can just walk out onto the street and hail one yourself; make sure you know the fare in advance, though or you'll pay a "tourist" price!

There are budget options with a couple of backpacker hostels in Kabale, Uganda. They are basic, but good enough for the purpose. Most travelers will push on to Lake Bunyonyi, but the Kabale, Uganda hostels are friendly and full of information about the region. Kabale, Uganda hostels can help organize onward travel and with entry to Bwindi for the gorillas. While it's not a tourist town by any means, it's still a friendly place and easy to walk around. There are a number of accommodation options if you prefer something a little more comfortable than a backpackers', and there are a few decent places to eat here. There are plenty of ATMs in Kabale and this is where the reliable, for Uganda, Wi-Fi is available. At the lake, you might not get that, if you stay in one of the cheaper places, so catch up with emails home in Kabale.
