Get to know Edirne (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Edirne.

Edirne is a town in the region of Thrace, Turkey, and it is one of those cities most people overlook when planning their travel itinerary in the country. It is, however, one of the best places in the country to visit, whether for a stay at one of the clean, affordable hostels or a visit to the many museums, palaces, and monuments here.

One of the most fascinating places to visit in Edirne is the Complex of Sultan Bayezid II Museum. This is a complex that is over a hundred years old. Once an ancient hospital that was specialized in the treatment of mental health issues through aromatherapy and peaceful living, it is today a monument to 15th-century life, medicine, and relaxation. It is only about two kilometers from the center of town, so you can walk to the museum on a cool day.

Turkey is a diverse country, and Edirne’s religious sites showcase this. From your hostel, you will be within walking distance of a number of mosques, catholic churches, synagogues, and more. The Grand Synagogue of Edirne is a huge ancient Jewish structure that is simple on the outside and filled with fascinating architecture and interior design.

One last religious place to see is the Sveti Georgi Orthodox Chruch, a church that has stood for over a century. After seeing the church, head down to your hostel for a quick meal and then visit the Karaagac Train Station, an old-time connecting stop between Istanbul and Greater Europe. While it is now a branch of the local university, it is still an architectural and historical marvel.

Other old structures include the Meric River Bridge, a large stone bridge in the middle of town that is on the return trip from the old train station. Restaurants near the bridge provide good food and great views at the same time.
