Get to know Dalvik (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Dalvik.

Dalvík is the primary village of the municipality of Dalvíkurbyggð, located in northern Iceland. With a modest population of about 1,500 residents, the town is situated within the Svarfaðardalur valley on the western coast of fjord Eyjafjörður.

Dalvík’s harbor serves as a port for both imports as well as tourist boat rides. In fact, a large part of the area’s tourism is drawn due to the opportunities for whale watching and fishing.

While in town, you can join a tour which takes a small group on a boat for several hours, with whale sightings almost guaranteed. You may get to see the larger humpback whale as well as the smaller minke whale while you are taken on a scenic ride along the sometimes calm, at other time rugged waters. You might even get to fish a bit, with the chance to sample the catch after it has been grilled to perfection. Just be sure to wear waterproof shoes and clothes along with gloves to ensure your comfort throughout the tour.

Another tourist attraction in this part of town is heli-skiing, a type of skiing along unbeaten paths only accessible via helicopter transportation. Extreme sport lovers will be all too familiar with the opportunities of wild action within the area.

After a day of adventures along the cold coast and snowy mountains, visitors also like to experience the public baths the entire country is well-known for. Dalvík’s version of the geothermally heated community pools is as clean and enjoyable as possible. There is a large swimming pool at the ideal temperature for active fun. There are also two smaller hot pools at varying temperatures, optimal for relaxation and comfort. The kids are kept busy with a children’s play area along with a water slide. There is a gym included for those who want to work on their fitness levels. The rest of the visitors can opt to sip some of the complimentary coffee as they inhale the steam and look out at the gorgeous, Arctic views.

Once the day comes to an end, you can check into one of the handful of hostels within Dalvík. Given exceptionally high marks from former guests, these hostels provide very clean beds and facilities along with security. As soon as you arrive at your hostel of choice, you can expect your hosts to welcome you with friendly conversation and helpful advice. The establishments are also ideally located, whether it be near skiing or whale-watching. Just be sure to bring sheets and towels to avoid having to rent them.
