Our handwritten guide on Backpacking Lazio

The Lazio region of Italy is primarily known for being the region that houses Rome, but there is even more to see and do outside the metropolitan region. Lazio is fairly average as far as traveler expenses go, with hostel prices being mid-ranged. If you're coming from another region such as Veneto, or a more expensive part of Europe like France or Scandinavia, you'll quickly notice that your money goes a lot further in Lazio.

Many of Lazio's hostels are located in Rome, as that is the city that most travelers come to see. If you don't mind taking transportation or want to see something outside of Rome, there are several hostels in surrounding smaller cities. These hostels often offer something more unique, such as being located at a campground.

Lazio is set by the Tyrrhenian Sea, which is part of the Mediterranean. There are ports where cruises often dock and there are also a few seaside cities where you can enjoy a day at the beach, particularly Ostia.

It's almost impossible to go to Lazio without stopping in Rome. Check out the Colosseum, Spanish Steps, Roman Forum, Trevi Fountain, and Pantheon, just to name a few of the dozens of Roman attractions. Near downtown Rome is Vatican City, the smallest official nation in the entire world. Here you can find many Catholic-based attractions and events, including speeches by the Pope. St. Peter's Basilica and the Sistine Chapel are also worth checking out.

Lazio is easy to get around. An airport is located in Ciampino (and you can get a hostel there very close to the airport if you wish). Train service is widely available across Italy and into neighboring countries, as long as you keep in mind that short train strikes happen often. Buses and car rental are also options, but may be a better idea for smaller towns, as Rome can be difficult for drivers to navigate. Rome is the only Lazio city with a subway system, and it is very small for the size of the city (they're reluctant to dig when nearly every inch of the city is a potential archaeological site). From Rome you can easily find transportation to other Lazio cities, as well as other prominent cities in other Italian regions.

From the scenic valleys to the historic urban area, you're bound to enjoy a trip in Lazio.
