Ostello di Bergamo Youth Hostel Reviews

Nice hostel

This is a nice hostel. It is clean and modern. It's a good stay if you have to take a flight from Bergamo airport, about a fifteen-minute ride from the hostel by car. We took the train to visit Milan from Bergamo, which is fine, an hour by train. The rooms are clean and have a private bathroom, which is clean as well. Breakfast is included. There is a parking in front of the hostel.

The guy there has discovered whole new levels of indifference. Answer your questions? Yes. Feel like you're inconveniencing the guy? Absolutely. It just felt like too much trouble. But the hostel was very modern, clean, and good value, though it seems like a transit point for flights in and out of Bergamo (hardly anyone about during my one night there) and a few early starts in my room and others (thin walls), so a quiet night's sleep wasn't had. I suggest you get there early -- the bus number to the hostel has changed to 6 instead of 14 (ask the driver when to get off) -- then later take bus 1 outside the hostel up to the old town for a wander around and a bite to eat. The same bus will return you to the hostel. Don't be afraid to ask the locals for help -- they're very friendly and helpful.

This place is an epic effort to get to. First of all, their directions are wrong. There is no number 14 bus. Instead you need to get the number 6 and then change to get the number 3. Overall it was nice when I got there -- en-suite bathroom, decent breakfast and helpful staff. Don't expect to get there easily, but it's worth it to see Bergamo Citta Alta -- full of charm and style.

Positives: Very friendly and helpful staff. Rooms very clean. Would stay here again and highly recommend it to any budget traveller.

Negatives: our bathroom door handle came off so you couldn't close the door all the way. Only one outlet in the room--when you have several gadgets to plug in, you have to sit in the common room waiting for them to charge.

Just so you know: if you get to Bergamo after the busses stop running for the night, it is about a 45 to 60 minute walk from the train station. The map on the hostel brochure has some streets that are not clearly marked so you have to really pay attention when you're walking.

We arrived here at roughly 10:30 p.m., after a confusing bus ride from the airport and the lack of signs on bus stops. The hostel is very institutional and there is little cafe roughly 10 minutes away. Apart from that there is little nearby. The outside garden is brilliant, nice fresh air with a safe environment. I stayed in a six-bed dorm; it was so hot that everybody slept with nothing but boxer shorts. Showers are nice and staff are friendly, although you will need to show your YHA card or they will make you buy one there and then. These three lads who checked in after us had to cough up an extra 18 euros each!

This is a typical HI [Hostelling International] hostel. It's clean, institutional but generally a good place to stay. It's located a bit out of town (and 200 stairs from the bus stop). I stayed in an eight-bed dorm with en suite bathroom. Lots of people stay here before flying out of Bergamo, but don't ignore the town. The breakfast was basic. The bathroom had no shower curtain so it flooded not very nice when you're the last one in of eight people. Large lockers were available.

We visited the hostel during February 2002 and February 2003. The hostel is functional and clean, but unfortunately has more of a feel of a hospital than a home. The hostel needs some sofas and rugs to make it homely. The staff are friendly and helpful, and gave us great advice on where to go to ski. The Citta Alta is wonderful.

Man, it was so great that I didn't see any of Bergamo - I ran around the hostel the whole time!
