Nomadas Hostel Reviews

This was my second visit to Nomadas

This seems to be the model for all the other (new-style) hostels in Mexico ... back-in-the-day, hosteling was a bare-bones, frill-free experience. don't get me wrong; that version had its appeal, too. This "full service" place in a converted historic home in Merida's city center (but 6 or 7 blocks from the noisy tourist area) is just the right combination of laid-back, quiet, and active ... this time I especially enjoyed the guest chef's information on local Yucatecan recipes.

Most Overrated Hostel I've Ever Stayed At!

i've done my fair share of traveling in the last 2years and this would have to be the worst ran hostel i've stayed at, apart from the more than friendly girls who work the morning shift. As far as the setup at this hostel it's old but has a lot of character and a very nice pool area but if your looking to have a good time of a night time at this "hostel" then you're better off looking elsewhere! Any time after 9:30-10pm is when the fun police are in full force so if your looking to have quite beer and talk to fellow travelers around the pool area then think again because once it clicks over 10pm then no noise for the rest of the night. Lets be honest if your staying at a hostel you should expect to hear a little bit of noise until at least midnight and shouldn't have to put up with being harassed by the night shift staff for talking in a quite and respectable matter. The one thing that did it for me and the 2 mates i was traveling with at this hostel was had another friend who was checking in on the second night and she got in around 2am from a late bus and when she went to book in they had cancelled her booking because she didn't check in before 10pm and told her "you need to book more than 24hours in advance for this hostel so you'll have to stay somewhere else tonight" so at 3am in the morning when there were plenty of vacant rooms she had to walk the streets of Mexico by herself to find a near by hostel, i'm 6" 2 and i wouldn't feel safe walking by myself that time of night so i could imagine how Anna would have felt. So in conclusion the positives of the hostels are it's in a great location and has a very nice pool area for chilling out during the day. Negatives are has all sorts of rules about alcohol possession (only beer and wine, no liquor), rude and very irresponsible night shift staff, it's rules are like a hotel not hostel and your not allowed to drink in the pool like every other hostel in mexico! My advice if you want to have fun don't stay here because there are plenty of other better hotels in Merida.

Great facilities, terrible staff, major letdown

The hostel looks amazing in the pictures simply for the fact that the facilities are amazing however this is where the positives end. The staff are extremely rude and unhelpful. My mates' girlfriend was turned away at 3 in the morning because they presumed earlier in the night she wasn't coming despite the 24hr check-in. Therefore on arrival they said they had no room. Despite us having many beds free in the large dorm that we were staying in that night. She had to wonder the streets by herself to find alternative accommodation. The next day she was not allowed to enter the hostel to visit us even for 5 minutes despite she had never actually met me at this stage and was from another country. Zero empathy or common sense was used by the staff. Also after 9 o'clock they are very against drinking alcohol (beer and wine is only allowed in the hostel in the first place). Large groups of people were cooking talking and laughing however because we had a few drinks on our table we were constantly being told to be quiet when the signs clearly stated noise was permitted at a time later then 9pm. The people that go here are lovely, however this isn't saying much, it is a hostel and 90% of people that stay at them are good people and are up for a good time. The atmosphere though was terrible due to the way it was ran disallowing a hostel vibe conducive to a positive hostel vibe. There were other hostels in merida with better locations and far better staff. The facilities granted were poorer. Overall extremely disappointed, mainly because of the great potential I saw and heard, but ultimately was the biggest letdown of my entire trip, and definitely my time in Mexico.

Good location, great pool, well-priced ...

Very well run, no issues, nice dorms with fans. The pool is excellent and very clean and well maintained. The tours offered are very good value and great fun. GO TO THE CENOTES! Absolutely outstanding!

Best hostel I´ve Ever Stayed at!

LOVED everything about this hostel and it made my time in Merida probably one of my favourite stops in my 4 months of travel. The weather was awful, but the showers were cool and had great pressure. The pool was amazing. The hammocks and tables with umbrellas everywhere give a great ambiance, and the live music and salsa dancing classes every night were incredible. Dorms got HOT, but individual super duty fans next to EVERY bed mitigated that. Best group of people I've ever met at a hostel too. Just uber friendly and fun every night. No real downside whatsoever.

A mediocre Choice

I really don't understand the fascination with the place. Stayed here last year, and found it to be passable. Stayed here this year, and it had gone downhill even further. Yes, the common area is nice. But the owner thinks it is a privilege to stay there, and has all sorts of rules about alcohol possession (only beer and wine, no liquor) and generally treats guest a bit snootily. Charges for everything, even leaving luggage a couple hours after check out time. Internet service was down more often than not for most of my stay. A friend stayed here in early May, and as of late June the same two smelly toilets were still out of order. There was not even a minimal attempt at cleaning the private room I was in. I had booked it online, and in 4 days they never even emptied the garbage, much less passed through it with a mop! It still has the advantages of a diverse group of travelers and a nice courtyard, but you can do better in Merida at a cheap hotel, especially if there are more than one of you.
