Get to know Stavanger (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Stavanger.

Stavanger is a city in southwestern Norway. With a population of 125,000 people (in the main city area), it is the 4th largest city of Norway. Stavanger is home to many interesting attractions including Norway's oldest cathedral (the Stavanger Domkyrke), the Stavanger Oil Museum and more. Stavanger was founded over 500 years ago, in the early 15th century.

You can easily get to Stavanger by most forms of transport. It has its own airport called Sola Airport (SVG). You can also take a train, for example from Oslo (about 9 hours, so you might want to consider purchasing a sleeper seat). Buses also run to Stavanger on a regular basis, and there is a ferry running between Bergen and Stavanger.

There is a nice public transport system you can use. It's recommended to use the buses to get around, since the taxis can be pretty expensive, like in most parts of Norway.

Hostels in Stavanger are of good quality, but like in most places in Norway, a bit on the expensive side (still being the most cost-effective option though). You'll pay about 25 - 30 euros for a dorm bed and a bit more for double / twin rooms.

Stavanger is home to the oldest cathedral in Norway: the Stavanger Domkyrke. The cathedral is situated right in the city centre. There are also many museums around, and depending on the weather, outdoors activities can be a great way of spending your time. Stavanger hostel staff can be a valuable source of information when planning your daily activities in the city.
