Naples is a timeless yet timely city in southern Italy. With everything from ancient history to old-school eateries to fresh counterculture, it's the third-largest city in Italy and a popular destination for hostel-goers. The area is full of very friendly locals, great food, amazing sights, and exciting ideas beyond belief.
There are many hostels in Naples, most of which fall between the ferry port and the central train station, but they may not be particularly close to the historical center of the city. Be sure to check the location of and transportation to your hostel before booking. While it's not necessary to stay inside the historical center, it is important to be within walking distance. The center is filled with world-renowned pizzerias, beautiful street art, fantastic cafes, and energized piazzas all day and all night long. The city is certainly chaotic, but visitors will find it to be a happy chaos that is a pleasure to take a part in. Here, jaywalking becomes an art and pizza will never be as good or as cheap.
Naples is also well connected to all parts of Italy by ferry, train, and bus and is a great home-base for exploring the surrounding areas. Day trips include taking the Circumvesuviana train to picturesque Sorrento on the Amalfi Coast, hiking up Mount Vesuvius, and exploring the archeological sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum.
