The market town of Oberstdorf, Bavaria, Germany, is situated in the far south of the state of Bavaria. It is located very close to the Austrian border in the Bavarian Alps and a renowned holiday destination for outdoor-sport enthusiasts. Hiking is very popular, as is skiing on the mountains Nebelhorn and Fellhorn. In December, Oberstdorf also hosts the first part of the famous ski-jumping Four Hills Tournament (in German, "Vierschanzentournee"). More than seventy-five kilometres of cross-country ski tracks are available in the region. The Ski Museum in the Audi Arena Oberstdorf is the perfect place for everyone who loves skiing and wants to know about the history of this sport. The ski jumping hill Schattenbergschanze is on the outskirts of the town and the premises is also known by the name of Audi Arena Oberstdorf, formerly Erdinger Arena, which has a capacity of around twenty-seven thousand audience seats.

In Oberstdorf, there are a couple of old farmhouses, which are particularly interesting for architecture lovers.

Passionate hikers should not miss the dramatic gorge Breitachklamm. This scenic landscape is located at the exit of the Kleinwalsertal near Tiefenbach, a city district of Oberstdorf. It is the deepest gorge of the Bavarian Alps and it was created during the last ten thousand years after the Würm Ice Age. Breitachklamm is a perfect area for nature photography and attracts more than three hundred thousand visitors a year. Hiking in the region is not limited to summer; more than one hundred forty kilometres of cleared trails and panoramic walks wait for active visitors.

The climate of the market town is continental. Due to the geographical elevation of just over eight hundred metres it is cooler compared to the average in the state of Bavaria. The mean maximum temperatures reach around twenty-one degrees Celsius in summer. In winter, you can expect average maximum temperatures ranging from one to three degrees Celsius. However, very cold nights are very common.

The municipality is a very popular tourist destination. Therefore, you can find plenty of hotels, smaller private guesthouses, and holiday apartments; there are no hostels in Oberstdorf, Bavaria, Germany itself, but hostel options exist around ten kilometres south in an area that's surrounded by the unspoilt alpine nature. The easiest option to get to the hostel is by car. However, from May to October there is also a bus service from Oberstdorf available. The so-called bus line “Bergsteigerlinie” connects the centre of Oberstdorf with the hostel eight times a day.
