Get to know Ostend (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Ostend.

Guess what? Ostend is also named and spelled Oostende - It is the same destination. Goodbye confusion.

Ostend is the biggest city on the Belgian coastline, therefore it is visited a lot during the summer not only by Belgian tourists looking for a not-too-faraway holiday destination but also international visitors. Not too far from the beach, there are options for hostels in Ostend, perfect for budget travelers. Your chosen Ostend hostel is child friendly and the breakfast offered is included in the price of the room, which is always a bonus. An Ostend hostel is the perfect value-for-money solution if you're planning to stay in Ostend for few days, also because of the location close to the sea and to other main attractions like the famous Mercator, which is a former sailing for merchant navy officers, and it's possible to visit because it's open to the public.

Another nice thing to see in Ostend is the white and blue lighthouse called "De Lange Nelle," which is still working (only four lighthouse in total are still working along the Belgian coastline). This lighthouse has just over three hundred steps in total and it's a beautiful site that's not to be missed. The train station itself is a beautiful structure with an interesting architecture that should be visited even if you're not planning on taking a train.

There is a casino in Ostend for the gambling lovers. If you're willing to see some places along the coast, taking the tram "Kusttram" is a good option. In fact, by buying a day ticket, it's possible to hop off and on again anytime. This tram goes almost all the way to the French border one way and almost to the Dutch one the other way; the only problem is that it can get overcrowded depending on the time of the day and the year too.
