Our handwritten guide on Backpacking Missouri

The state of Missouri is located in the Midwest. Although hostels are not very common in this area, it still provides the events, attractions, and atmosphere that backpackers crave.

Highway 70 cuts Missouri into north and south halves, and it's a good road to drive to get acquainted with the state. At the westernmost end is Kansas City, a twin city that shares a name with a smaller city across the border in Kansas. It is the city with the second largest population in Missouri and is filled with museums and sporting events.

Slightly to the east of Kansas City, you'll find Independence, the city known as the official starting point of the Oregon Trail.

Moving further to the east on Highway 70 will eventually bring you to Columbia. If you take a detour south of this, you can visit the state capital, Jefferson City. While this is a very small city for a capital, you can still see the capitol building, the state penitentiary, and a stretch of the Missouri River.

Before hitting the Illinois border, you will arrive in St. Louis, the largest city of Missouri. This is the best place in the state to find a hostel, and also the best place to find things to do. Visit the iconic St. Louis Gateway Arch over the Missouri River. Listen to the rhythm of ragtime, jazz, and blues music.

To extend your time in Missouri, head south for a connection to nature. Visit the Ozarks and Ozark National Scenic Riverways, or Mark Twain National Forest. Visiting the Ozarks is beautiful any time of year, but if you can, go in the fall when all of the trees change into bright colors. Nature enthusiasts will also appreciate the abundance of rivers throughout the state. The Missouri, Mississippi, and Ohio rivers run for many miles.

Barbecue is a popular cuisine found in specialty restaurants throughout the state, particularly in St. Louis. Pizza is another common fare, as is pork, ravioli, and butter pastries.

Missouri is a unique junction, combining the personalities of both the Midwest and the Southern states. As one of the underrated states in the United States of America, a visit here will set you apart as a thorough traveler!
